Required to live in BOQ?

I'm an ROTC Ensign designated SNA. I volunteered for the ISO program and I am going to do IFS in Pensacola. There are six of us from our unit (all SNAs) reporting on 18 June. Four of us are ISO volunteers, two are not. We requested TDY to house hunt next week and were told today that it was denied because all of us (ISO and not) are required to live in the BOQs when we go down next month. Anyone else in the same situation? Our GS said that it had to do with the accounting codes on our orders. Our accounting code for being stashed at the unit is 1XX, meaning BAH pay. Our accounting code for ISO/IFS/API in Pensacola is 3XX, meaning BOQ.

You are 'required' to live there, unless, of course, you don't want to. If you want to get BAH and live off base, you must get a piece of paper signed by the bach. officer housing saying you are not staying there, take it to PSD, and have then start allocating you some BAH $. They say you're supposed to, but a majority do not. It just takes some finnageling (sp?). No one gets house hunting coming out of ROTC (I think... pure speculation)

I got house hunting when I was commissioned ;)

The Q at Pcola is usually full. Most people live off-base. However, I haven't been there since February, so it could have changed.

I was Commissioned in DEC out of ROTC. House Hunting leave is something that your current ROTC unit can grant you if they so desire. It is ten days permissive TAD, starting on a Friday and ending 10 days later on a Monday.

Also,
As far as the BOQ goes, I would speculate that since you are an SNA and since you "could" go to Whiting Field for Primary and since they are making all Bachelors stay in the BOQ at Whiting that this could be why you have to stay in the Q at Pensacola. If I were you, I would call down to Flight Management at 850-452-3342 and ask for LT Domzal. He is in charge of all the Ensigns in the A-pool. I would tell him your situation and ask him if they are still requiring you all to stay in the BOQ up at Whiting, just to be sure.

Good Luck,
Charlie

Maybe they said that because NROTC would be a permanent duty station, right? I was BDCP (considered a permanent duty station) and went to API on temporary orders so they said I had to stay at the BOQ. Except when I got there it was full so I ended up with per diem :) If you really don't know call PSD and talk to a couple different people and they should know since they do the paperwork.

I called down to Flight Management today and this is what I was told:

We are not, repeat not, required to live on base for API/ISO/IFS. However, if we go to Whiting for Primary the Navy will not pay us BAH because we are expected to live on base in Whiting. So if we get an apartment, sign a lease, then go to primary in Whiting, we will have to pay the rent using base pay. If we go to primary in Corpus, its ok because the military clause in the lease will allow us to break the lease if we move more than 50 miles away. Furthermore, the Navy will pay BAH for Corpus.

I know most guys (and gals) out there do not want to stay in the Q during IFS/API etc.... I'm of the opinion that staying in the Q is actually a pretty decent setup. I got down to Pcola in feb04, went to IFS at eglin, and i'm about half way through API. Living 5 minutes from work is freakin great :D . I would have been pissed off everyday for A-pool muster if I would have lived 15-20-30 min away and had to drive in for a bulls#*^! 5 min muster everyday. :icon_rage
As for as the weekends...it took me about 2 seconds to meet a bunch of great guys who had places off base that were cool with letting me crash at their place after a night at the Bama or willies etc.. Just my .02. I know it is not for everyone.

Actually its probably better that they changed it...otherwise I would have been tryin to find ways to stay in A-pool forever! :)
