Retake?

After speaking with someone who evidently looked at my package, my recruiter has advised me to retake my ASTB to improve my chances at selection next time.

My scores were, 8/9/9/59. I really don't know how much better I could do. Anyone heard any firm OAR numbers from recent selectees?

Thanks

The 8 and 9s look good....i guess if he told you that then maybe he didnt like the OAR score. Is the rest of your package competitive? Maybe he is just trying to get you to get everything or certain parts higher to have a better package as a whole. I dont really think taht the scores are bad though

What designator are you applying for? That could make a difference in what score they're looking at.

The OAR looks more than decent, I got selected NFO with 53/7/7/8 at the early november board. Off the top of my head, SNA's who were selected at the same board (though most of the ones I heard from were BDCP FY07) had 8+ on AQR/PFAR. I was going to retake, but my recruiter advised me that I was on crack if I were to risk getting a lower score over a few points. My humble opinion is keep those scores, the rest of your package is what will make or break you.

I should have said SNA. The rest of my package is good, I think. Letters of rec. from a retired intel col., the CO of a unit here at NAS Pensacola, ret. Lt Col who is a joint ops instructor and Top Gun Grad, and my karate instructor for the past 15 years. 300 hours with a Multi and CFI. Downsides, PRK and I'm 26 married with a kid due yesterday.

I don't want to doubt what someone who is supposed to be in the know said, but I have difficulty believing 2-3 points on an OAR would break my package. Probably a needs of the Navy issue or they thought I would be carrying in too much baggage with a family, a waiver, and my age. That is why I was curious about some hard numbers for SNA selectees on their OAR.

Thanks

I was picked up on the Nov 4th board as SNA with a 67/8/9/9

Another candidate from my NRD was picked up for NFO with a 67/7/8/8

We were both 21yrs old, 1.5 years to college completion and no real baggage. Not sure if these numbers give you any idea of the requirements, but maybe they can give you an idea of being an almost lock into the program.

I don't know if it's different for NFO applicants, but I was told that the score only goes down as a pass/fail for the board selection. My OSO said that only if it really came down to the wire between you and another applicant for the last spot, then they might look at your scores.

For USMC its pass/fail. For Navy they actually look at your raw score. This is what the Navy gets for not being required to do pullups :icon_wink

Those are really good scores, I would definately trade with ya. A 59 oar isnt going to turn any heads in a negative way I dont think, but your line scores will turn heads in a positive way. Congratulations on your childs due arrival.
