Apparently a Russian Akula submarine recently spent > 30 days in the Gulf of Mexico and wasn't detected until it had left the area. The news article (google "Russian sub in gulf") doesn't say who detected the sub or how, but it seems Sen Cornyn from Texas is hopping mad and demanding answers from the CNO and DOD officials. We need some good "Cold War" news to stir up an otherwise slow news Summer . . .

"Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here.
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Renault: Oh. Thank you very much. Everybody out at once."

We go there...they go here.... Were you expecting something else?

Psst...there may have been French or Dutch or UK subs there as well...they still have territories there. WGAF?

International waters are...well...international waters, I guess.

I'm retired and out to pasture. You guys don't care that we don't know what's off our coast . . . fine by me. I just hope somebody was tracking that boat.

How often do we have to tell the media exactly what our military forces are actually capable of and/or have been doing? Typical media BS groping for attention.

With CBP patrolling for drug traffickers and illegals, I'd bet we knew they were there.

It would be nice if Ivan would send more nuke boats out to play.

Damn fine of him to save us all that JP5 by putting them right in our own backyard.

Does anyone know the story of the German sub captured in WWII that had two Galveston, TX, theater tickets belonging to two of the crew? Gutsy move. I heard that much in a History of Seapower course but hadn't heard the full story.

I think it was a super-secret Soviet spam sub, sent here to dispense spam 'trons to AW full of great deals on car insurance, Levitra, and bestiality.
Darn, and here I was hoping they were bringing the brides at a discount.

I'm sure a P-3 detected it right away....
