One quirk I remember from boot camp was how the DI's would say "Gen Gray" when asked who their commandant was(i.e he was CMC when they joined) With this in mind I want to remember the vision of General Krulak who is my CMC.
Recent events in Haditha and Iraq are showing just how remarkable his vision was. Back in 1998, all I ever read about was "The strategic corporal" and "The 3 block war" and it's amazing just how omniscient he seems now.
His combat experience had been vietnam and Iraq, both relatively large and (more) conventional than those his vision would attempt to predict. Before the movie Blackhawk Down, the experiences of Somalia seemed to be a small chapter that most were happy to forget and Kosovo where airpower 'won' the war was the template for the future. Gen Krulak's genius was not only to discern wheat from chaff, but all to align the entire Corps towards his vision creating the crucible for recruits and SULE II for officers.
Here is an article in his own words.
