Second Opinion

Currently I am applying for a commission to the Navy and I wanted a separate opinion from the members of this site on my chances at acceptance to compare with the information given to me by my recruiter. It is not that I do not trust him, only that I would like a broader view before making some important decisions. I took my ASTB today and received the following score AQR:5, PFAR:4, FOFAR:4, OAR:51. I have a college GPA of 3.34, and have received recommendations from two Navy Captains, one active duty, one retired Marine Corp Captain, one retired Army Colonel, one County Commission, and Lt. Governor that have been received by my recruiter. Any opinion would be appreciated. I'm wondering if I should retake the ASTB to see if get better scores or if I should wait.

Your ASTB scores could use improvement.

Not even for NFO?

Brett

NFO I believe I'd qualify for sight wise - I suppose I though that by removing the pilot portion as a possibility I'd have less success in applying to the Aviation community.

Right now though I guess I'm just trying to decide if re-taking would be my best option. My recruiter said the scores were "competitive", but I'd feel more comfortable with a higher score - the only risk being that if I somehow scored lower, that score counting over my current one.

Not at all. If you're interested in aviation, get your test scores up and apply for an NFO slot. Being in a jet beats the hell out of anything else you can do in the Navy - go for it.

Intel, SWO, and Supply. My vision doesn't cut it for Aviation.

I believe Intel will look at your AQR, but I *think* SWO or Supply do not look at anything from the ASTB other than OAR (ask your recruiter). To give yourself the best chance for Intel and NFO (if you decide to apply for that) you should really try to hit at least 6's and 7's in those portions. Your OAR is not bad, but if you decide to take the test again you should try to improve in that area as well.

If you have confidence that you can improve your scores, go for it. Just make sure you improve, otherwise you will have to wait 90 days before taking the ASTB for your third (and final) time. There is a ton of information on this site about what you should study and there are plenty of practice problems and such that can also be found in those materials.

Trust your recruiter, but remember that ultimately it's your future.

Best of luck.

I would suggest retaking the ASTB. If you look around the site a little bit, you will find that those scores are relatively low compared to the stats posted by others. Get some good gouge, study up and take it again.
