Selected for NFO today, scheduled to ship THIS SATURDAY!

I just got a call from my recruiter today saying that i've been selected for NFO. Im excited but at the same time overwhelmed because im scheduled to ship out to OCS this Saturday, march 3rd . I didn't select this date for OCS and definitely not ready for ocs by that time. Is this normal for the Navy to select a date for you? The best answer my recruiter told me was that the Navy needed to fill in nfo slots by certain deadline. Is there anyway to postpone this date?

First off, congrats on the selection. I'm leaving Thursday for the March 3rd OCS class. As for being ready or not you should have specified on your app the earliest date you could be ready to leave. If the Navy needed to fill a slot and you said you'd be good to go I'm not sure there's much you can do to get it postponed. At the very least let your recruiter know your concerns and see what he can do. Good luck and if nothing changes I'll see you Sunday.

The same thing happened to me on friday and I just told my recruiter i would prefer to be in the next class date so that i would have more time to get my life squared away and kick my PT up a notch and he said it wasnt a problem, but i am going in for supply and my circumstances might be different than yours. I would talk to your recruiter or processor. Good Luck and if you cant get it changed, just think of it as the sooner you start, the sooner you finish

Mongol, while not ideal, as long as you can pass your In-PRT at OCS you'll be fine. In fact, you'll be better off than about 10% of the candidates (at least when I was there). The other stuff will come. Unless you have some sort of personal/financial issues that would keep you from going, I'd go. Ordmods are never easy to come by and they tend to be more painful the lower you are on the totem pole. If you need specific advice or last-minute prep, let me know.

Is this common?
I'm guessing not, but my recruiter told me there is a push to make up numbers right now. My concern is this: I'm putting a package in this week, and I won't be able to go until later in the year (I'm kinda counting on the Navy Lag IF I get accepted). My earliest start date reflects that, so I'm hoping that is OK, but if I'm accepted and not available, I don't want to answer Q's as to my commitment level and/or lose my spot because I'm not there. Most of my Findocs are already in order (EPSQ, MEPS) Any feedback?

Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry for forgetting to congratulate you Mongol. Congratulations!

I have the same issue. My husband is in Iraq, Army, and will be getting out the service in Jan. That is when I can go to OCS, as we have two young children that I will not have both parents bail on at the same time. So I am up for the Feb board, and really hope that it does not hinder a decision. I read a instruction that said you can apply as long as you are available to go with in one year of application, so we should be good.

If I were to go to OCS this saturday, my PRT score would be around: 1.5K=13.5min, situp-50, pushup-70. This is OK for the first try i hope?

And I believe i should memorize the "code of conduct", "chain of command","general orders of a sender", and "sailor's creed" right?

General Orders of a Sender: (pay attention MB!)

1. To take charge of this mail and all government correspondence in view.

2. To walk my route in a military manner, keeping always on the alert for juvenile delinquents, dogs, and wanted felons.

3. Report all deliveries of the mail I am instructed to send.

4. Repeat all "Howdy"s more distant from the mailbox than my own.

5. Quit my route only when all mail is delivered.

6. Recieve, deliver, and pass on to the sender who relieves me all correspondence from the Commanding Officer, Command Duty Officer, Officer of the Deck, and Officers and Non-Commissioned Officers of the mail only.

7. Talk to no one except those on my route

8. Give the alarm in case of improper delivery

9. Call the Officer of the Mail in any case not covered by instructions.

10. Salute all Officers, all colors and standards not cased, including the post office flag.

11. Be especially watchful at night and during the time when stray dogs roam free, to run swiftly should I encounter one, so as to not be bitten upon my butt.

While this may be true for USPS OCS, I think in the Navy, we concentrate on the general orders of a sentry. Good luck to you, my friend.

Edit: Damn it! Duped! Good post, kickflip.

I had 2 weeks once I found out I was selected. Things move quickly, but If I recall, I put on my app that I was available for immediate employment.

Not stellar times, but it passes (barely). Just be sure to push on your run at OCS. You'll need to be a bit lower than that, but reachable. Don't kill yourself trying to memorize the big 4. You'll have time enough to do that once you get there. Good luck and congrats!

He never said whether his 13.5 min 1.5k was actually supposed to be 1.5 miles. 13.5 minute 1.5k translates in to about a 22 minute mile and a half, so if thats true there's no amount of pushing your walker around the neighborhood that is going to get you in shape for the PRT... Unless you happen to be a Master Chief...
