Should have got a waver?

Hi everybody... I've been reading the boards for a while now and have found a ton of good info here!

I have a question, and am hoping to get a bit of guidance. I have been selected to go to PLC Jrs. in 2007 with an air contract. Before I signed, I told my OSO that I had some back problems when I was younger... A few compression fractures, minor c-curve, and a minor birth defect at the base of my spine. I have no problems now, and haven’t for years. He called the doc down at MEPS, who said that I need to go to a doctor, have them check out my back, and then go to MEPS with the report. So, I went, had x-rays taken, and my whole spine examined. The end conclusion by the doctor is that I do have some problems, but no more than any other active person my age would have. I told the OSO this, and he said that it is not a big deal then, and don't worry about saying anything. I did what he said, MEPS never said anything, and I got selected a few months later.

Here is the thing, I'm realizing now that this was not the right thing to do, and that I should have gotten a waver for it. I'm going to contact the OSO in the next couple of days and tell him that I want to get a waver for it. I'm just trying to find out how much this is going to screw me. I obviously don't want to get un-selected, and I don't want to get the OSO in trouble either.

Anybody got any ideas?

Yeah, If people who have experience dealing with this sort of thing (OSO and MEPS) don't have a problem with your medical history why do you? One of the comments made to me during my flight physical was people going around self diagnosing their problems get themselves introuble because they don't know what they are talking about and use terms to describe one medical issue that means something entirely different and then the wheel has to be reinvented trying to figure everything out.

You brought it to his attention, good for you... but sometimes the squeeky wheel gets the attention and not in a good way. If there is something wrong with you, let them find it. If you go around starting to produce medical issues for yourself then don't be surprised if you find a way to NPQ yourself right out of a commission.

I think you need to mix a little realism in with you sense of integrity... don't go around making trouble for yourself by being so honest you tell on yourself (and your peers) for every little thing you do.

I see what your saying, but my fear is getting a dishonorable discharge if my back gets screwed up down the road. I’m worried that saying, “well I told the OSO”, won’t do much for my side of the story!

If your medical report with those xrays is on file with MEPS, then I wouldn't imagine that you have anything to worry about from a liability standpoint. You brought the issue to their attention and they cleared you.

The thing is that the doctor wasn’t a MEPS doc. It was a private doc who gave me the ok. I told my OSO that the private doc said I was ok. He said don’t even worry about saying anything to MEPS. So, MEPS does not know about this, or my past medical history in this regard. I just don’t want this to come back to haunt me, and am unaware of what the repercussions would be.

There was a canidiate at OCS next to me whom had put down something on his medical screening when we were inprocessing that had nothing to do with the questions on the screening. The doc pretty much told him that we have to check this out, but there are real medical concerns and there are ones that are just headaches for you and us. I.E. they didn't care that he had bumped his knee/head/elbow etc. when he was 3. I say you should always be open about your medical history, you already have been. Your just gonna cause yourself and your OSO a headache. I know you are worried about it coming back on you, but you told your OSO about it, if anything it will come back on him. To give you an example there was a guy I shipped with that had punched a goalpost a few weeks before OCS and broke his hand. He told his OSA that he had a broke hand, but his OSA said well just go ahead and ship and see what they say. They x-ray'd his hand and sent him home, he didn't get introuble for coming with a broke hand, Although there was alot of jokes on part of the staff, it came back on his OSA.

I GUARANTEE that you won't get dishonorably discharged for a medical condition. If there's anything critically wrong with your back, MEPS will find it on their own, and the waiver process will begin. They're the only ones who can grant you a medical waiver.

Alright, thanks for the peace of mind! I'm just wanting to make sure that I'm not going to screw myself over in the future, but it seem like I don't have to worry.
