Just curious...how many Pilots or FO's out there, against all odds, still maintain their smoking habit? I understand that it's a terrible habit, but a hard one to break, and it's already one strike against you from a flight physiology standpoint. I've been trying to quit for years and I'm worried how this will affect my flying. Do any of you guys still smoke?

Question, what do you mean one strike from flight physiology? What are the other strikes, and how many before you're out?

I smoke like a gaddamn 72 Volkswagon.

Stop worrying.

In honor of your post, I shall "go burn one, yo."

I'm hoping that by the time my lungs really start getting hit w/ the tar nano tech will be able to clean all that crap out for me. Then I can laugh at all the non-smokers who say I shouldn't smoke :D

Two words: Lung Brush.

When I was 12, my cousin and I stole some of his dad's Marlboro reds. I took one drag and nearly fell over. Haven't touched a cig since.

Now...for the "civilized gentleman" in me...I have been known to take part in the occasional:

Smoke 'em if you've got 'em...:icon_smok

I could count the number of my fellow JO's who smoked as an everyday habit on one hand. A large number would smoke when they were drunk but that is a different story, though if you are like Zab and always drunk.....well, I guess when in Rome..... :D . As for affecting your health, I knew a large number of enlisted aircrew who smoked and had no problems passing their flight physicals.

Nothing beats a nice maduro smoke after a big dinner though:

Of course, if you want to smoke DURING dinner...then, the Nagila is always a good smoke. Bought mine in Turkey, smokes like a champ:

"Back in the Day" ... probably 2/3 of my Amigos smoked. And some of them even smoked cigarettes!!!

(edit: pix)

I smoked Marlboros for 10 years -- age 18 to 28 -- 2-3 packs a day. Outside the 3-mile limit, a carton cost $1. As in ONE US $. It was such a good deal -- you couldn't afford NOT to smoke !!

I quit cold-turkey after one bad night behind the boat (1974) -- nicotene and night vision -- have never smoked cigarettes/inhaled since. Perhaps I should put that horror story on another thread -- it's amusing -- if I can get permission from some of the "Super" moderators on this forum -- they don't seem to like my "Sea Stories" ... too much "B.S." for them to handle ... :) :icon_wink

HOWEVER ...... I was advised to continue smoking cigars by my doctor to quell my disturbing, irreversable oral fixation. I smoke cigars --- just had a Fuente while watching the sun recede into the western sky here on the "ROCK" --- and have about $4-5000 worth of the Caribbean's finest in my 4'x6' temp controlled, sliding glass-front, mahogany/oak-lined humidor. Excessive? Perhaps, but I enjoy it. It relaxes me.

And my eyesight is still 20/10 on a good day ...

That's it. I'm officially moving in next door to you.

You like Gurkha's, too??? An excellent, not too well known cigar. And the packaging is second to none, as you will probably agree. I got mine @ Thompson Cigar --- not soliciting for them --- but for domestic purchases, you cannot go wrong with them, in my opinion.

I have had a grand total of one cigarette in my life on a very drunk night in Okinawa driving a light ace van around the island with all of us yelling "Arigato Gazaiamas" as loud as we could (You just had to be there)
Cigars on the other hand very nice looking to get a better humidor soon and someday a collection like A4s.

I'll add to the list. Only smoke when I'm entirely too drunk . . . if I ever start wanting one when I'm sober I'll worry.
