I whole-heartedly agree with not trusting one's life to "cheap". If I'm making a life insurance claim, I'm reaching for the USP45c not the 38 snub. I am more just looking for something fun to shoot, and use all the 38special rounds I'm sitting on. It looks like Charter Arms makes a low-end 5 shooter. How are their products?

IMO Charter Arms makes a nice firearm. Fit and finish not as nice as say the S&W, but overall a very good weapon, esp their LC Bulldog. Have heard some say it is the safest revolver made but cannot imagine what that means, e.g., what criteria for making that judgement.

What about the Ruger SP-101?

I had one for a few years and loved it. Does anybody have any gouge on it?

I sold my SP-100 stainless 4" bbl revolver many years ago and I'm not goin' back ...

I'm probably the only guy I know who has had a bad experience with a Ruger-anything.

When it was brand new --- about 20 years ago (?) --- I took it to the range and ran a few boxes of good ammo and some fodder through it. Problems followed. I attributed it to "dirty" powder ... but after two boxes of Winchester white box "fodder" ... the cylinder was so fouled with powder residue that the trigger was tough to pull. Smooth was not an option. I cleaned it --- function normal --- but it fouled up REALLY quick again. This time --- with Federal red box. GI spec ammunition. I didn't get it. Still don't ....

I never had this problem with another "modern" smokeless powder revolver, new or 90 years old.. But then again, with this exception, I have never heard anything but praise for Ruger products. They're built like Grumman and Douglas aircraft --- tough.

I"m surprised about that, especially with the great results I've had with my Ruger GP-100 4". I love that revolver, it's beautiful and functions flawlessly. I guess there are always lemons.

Funny you mention Son of Sam, I was just reading about him on www.crimelibrary.com He was a MESSED UP guy, for sure.

I wish this were true. My recently aquired Ruger 10/22 has an unbelievably rough and nearly-impossible to cycle by hand (takes seriously probably 25-30 pounds of pressure pulling back on the charging handle to cycle it when it's not already cocked) action, and is now in the hands of my gunsmith.:icon_rage

Mine is brand new, maybe that's the problem. I've heard the newer ones normally have rougher action, i.e. burrs, badly finished internals in the receiver, etc etc.

In any event, hopefully it will be better when I get it back.
