some motivation?

shotcalla10

what percent of RL officers get jets?
Some of you know already that I was NPQed for SNA final select (because of my color vision) but got picked up for NFO. I should still be excited like hell and I am excited but still a bit disappointed that I didnt get SNA since it was my first choice. I am even a bit confused why NFO board gave me the final select when SNA board didn't think I was medically qualified since they have pretty much the same requirements. Regardless, can NFO folks out there provide me with reasons why being an NFO is so much cooler than NA? =) I really believe in things happening for a reason and I know that I will make the best out of everything that gets thrown at me but I just need some more motivation and really look forward to being an NFO since all this time my research was mostly on being a Naval Aviator and I dont know much about NFOs and what kind of work they do and what gets them going and gives them a hard on (besides women... or men but lets not think about that). Just looking for some motivation, is all, to get me through the next few months of getting/staying in shape and even when I get to OCS. Thanks.

It's all aviatin', bro. No matter what you fly or which seat, it's all Navy Air, and there's nowhere better to be.

Use that little ol' Search button at the top. There's lots of gouge on here about platforms and roles.

Get over it. You bring a "woe is me" attitude to the wardroom and you'll get eaten alive. There are plenty of people who would kill to be in your shoes...so love it or leave it. ****Side note: My only first choice the Navy's given me: Aviation. And I've loved every second since 4MAY2001.

Needs of the Navy. :icon_wink

Alright. Time to sack up and grow up. :icon_rage If you have any doubts, I don't want you having the same access to the ejection handle as the bobbling helmet you'll be telling what to do. That is reason enuf to realize that your country thinks you're worth more than the average American: to put you with that much responsibility. Have a beer, the fun has just begun and stop snivlin' that life has made other plans than you did...it only gets better/worse from here. Accept it.

haha I used plenty of the search function and read religiously about everything but from a wannabe's stand point, its like you guys speak in another language. I had to explain to my parents what an NFO was and all I could do was show them my F-18 hornet toy and point to the back seater.

I just found out today so I just need to let it sink in. I appreciate your tough love though. But yea I am excited, but I'm sure you've all had your time when you were disappointed only to find out that things worked out for the better. I just haven't had time to realize that things did work out for the better yet; although I really believe it.

Looks like you're getting your first taste of how the Navy runs. Didn't get SNA? Fine. Make the most out of it, work hard, hell try to be the best NFO the Navy has ever seen.

Want some motivation? Go ask all your friends how much fun they have at their day to day desk jobs. Ask them about what they do on a daily basis. Do they have their own message board full of people who love their job? Naval aviation man, you are already in such a select group just being selected. Think of all the people who would love to have just a chance to fly in any military aircraft, let alone the options all you FOs get. You are one of the lucky ones man, don't be a stick in the mud. This is an occasion that requires celebration - go find a lady and buy her a few beverages and snap out of it!

I dont need to ask my friends what its like to have a desk job. Been there, done that. Anyway, I think you guys are getting the wrong impression, it's not like I'm depressed or anything haha, I'm just glad I that I'm going to be a Naval Officer. You guys are completely right though, opportunities like this don't come very often and that's why I AM not gonna let it pass by. Thanks guys for all your help and support. I'll post my OCS date when it gets finalized to see who will be classing up with me.

Haha seems like Goob is the only one that really understood what I was looking for in my original post.

YUP I am the only one here that knows you! you will do fine and your commitment is not to be questioned. I know how badly you wanted SNA but NFO will do just fine, you will excel no matter what. CONGRATS I know you are glad the wait is almost over.

NFO was always my first choice. Pilot was my second choice. I've always thought the job of an NFO was cooler than a pilot. No specific reason really, I don't have the desire that many do to be in control of the aircraft. I just enjoy flying, being in the air, and working the mission (I used to like looking out he window, but tube rats melt if the sun hits them). As others have said, no matter what job you have, naval aviation is the place to be.

SNA was my first choice too but man come on, YOU ARE GOING TO FLY FOR A LIVING! Also if you were not ready to take SNFO if it came to you (regardless of how) you shouldn't have put it down. I'm sure it was super hard to be so close to SNA and then have it fall through your fingers, but just keep looking on that bright side, and that is you are in Naval Aviation! Good luck to you!

I have reasons similar to HalfBreed. I wanted to fly, but I didn't want to be at the controls (besides, it's more fun to be twisted around 180 in a hard seat, right?).

Dean from the golf course says get over it you'll love the JOB CATO! why does he call you that? I guess that is your call sign! Come up and he will explain to you the NFO job verbatim.

yessir. He calls me CATO because of some asian lawyer in the OJ simson case back in the day, haha. I swore in this past thursday and feeling pretty darn good right now. I had to write a letter requesting OCS date extension to february and faxed it over today.
