Some of these probably don't belong in API, but...

How long after OCS does API usually start. What does the Navy put you up to in the mean time?

Are there any other foriegn duty stations than Japan?

How can I locate reserve squadrons?

Can anybody enlighten me on when in the training process a car is needed. I sold mine and am wondering if I should buy another, or if it would just sit a lot while I go through training.

Thanks

I can only answer two of the above questions. I graduated from OCS in August, and I classed up for API last week, Jan 6. If you have already completed IFS or its equivalent (pilot's license) the wait is slightly shorter. If you are an SNFO, the wait is a few months longer. If you volunteer to go to Vance AFB, you will start API a lot quicker. In the meantime, you muster every day at 0730 or they will give you a stash job (ie: working at the Naval Aviation Museum) two or three days/week.
I'm not really sure what you mean about the car thing. I don't know how you would plan on getting to/from base without a car. So the answer to that would be that you will need one immediately upon arriving here in Pensacola. This city is very spread out and even if you have a car, it oftentimes takes 45 minutes to drive from one end to another. They are not allowing API students to live at the BOQ, so that option doesn't exist. If you mean during OCS what point do you need a car, the answer is is that you don't really need a car, but if you want to get the heck off base and away from ppl you have to see EVERY day, it is highly recommended. I didn't have a car when I came down for OCS but on weekends I had liberty, I rented one, just to be by myself and have freedom. Then I finally bought one at about week 8 or 9 or so. Hope this helps.

Whiting doesnt exactly have an awsome NEX. If you plan on going grocery shopping, or drinking, or doing anything, a car would be needed. Unless you want to be a guy that always asks for a ride. If you end up in Corpus, same deal. Add ontop of that a mile walk from the Q to the flight line. A car is defenitly necessary all the way through training.

Youll have plenty of time and need for a car.

OCS to API can be a few weeks or six months. Also depends if you need to do IFS first.

Looking up reserve squadrons is getting about ten years ahead of yourself. They offered reserve option to FY 04 guys, but, its been closed off since then. Apparently some 05 dude wrote a letter to an admiral about it, but, wasnt too persuasive.

Not sure if his question is completely answered about the car, though. While in OCS, is it all that necessary? Based off what I've read here or heard, it's a nice to have, but not needed during OCS. Thoughts?

Yeah, in addition to being able to get out of dodge during liberty, you can store certain things in there. I had my sleeping bag in my Jeep, which I subsequently retrieved and slept in every night so as no to F-up my rack. It's the little things, you know.

Yeah, I just live my life one pathetic, lonely day to the next. Obviously, as someone who hasn't slept in their sleeping bag while at OCS, you're in no position to judge. :D

Slept on top of my rack (under the oh-so-soft G.I. wool blanket) during the winter at Parris Island.

Slept on top of my rack (and on top of my poncho liner) during the miserable Quantico summer, in which the "environmental control system" in the barracks was inop. Black flag conditions outside, and double-black flag conditions inside.

And in both places, the bastard DIs would play "Two Sheets and a Blanket" every morning anyway.

So, technically, I have not slept in a sleeping bag at OCS.

No wonder I'm married.

How dare you...HOW DARE YOU try to equate your experience at OCS with mine. You've got a lot of growing up to do, son. I don't care about black flag, or double black flag. You can't go around living your life based on the flag conditions, or the availability of sheets. You just have to go out and do what feels right, whatever the consequences. Wait until you spend 10 years at OCS, then we can talk. Until then, how dare you!!!

In case anyone was wondering, [/sarcasm & mockery of others]

thanks fellas.

A question about sleeping on top of the rack:
Do you have to run out and put your sleeping bag back in the car every morning or what?

Oh yeah, and I'm not planning on being married anytime soon.

You can stow a sleeping bag or extra blanet in your locker.

Having a car at OCS is very nice, but, it will sit. Expect a "POV run" maybe once a week or less. If you dont have a car though, you cant be the driver.. bright side?
