The Sri Lankan navy has attacked a group of Tamil Tiger boats off the island's northern coast sinking five and killing 40 rebels, officials say.

This is actually a bit more common than you would think. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), better known as the the Taml Tigers, are one of the most capable terrorist/rebel groups in the world. They even have thier own air force now of light planes equipped to drop small bombs.

And if you were curious, they were pioneers in the use of individual suicide bombing. A female LTTE suicide bomber was responsible for the assasination of the Indian PM Rajiv Ghandi in 1991.

Yeah, I remember reading that about the air attacks. I did not know that about the suicide bombings - there's one innovation we all could have lived without.
