STA-21 questions.

Combating TIP training AGAIN?!
The 15 July deadline is almost here...
Does anyone have any last second application/package questions about STA-21?

Edited to change deadline.

The deadline was extended to 15 July this year per NAVADMIN 161/06, so maybe the questions will come a little late as well.

I'll offer up a question until then: If you are granted an age waiver, does it specify the duration of the waiver or are you still given the three years to complete your degree?

I haven't come across anything official on the subject, so I will tell you what I have seen so far...
I didn't need a waiver because I only need a year and a half to finish my BS, however, my orders have me in college for the full three years. This has been the norm for everyone that I talked to in my boost class.
I hope that answers your question.

It does shed some light on things. I know I'll need an age waiver and it's been requested in my application. My concern is that if I don't make it this year, selection next year would only give me 1 year to complete my degree, based on the stated max age waiver of 29. Thanks for the quick reply.

Sayre, I need the whole three years for the waiver, but nothing was ever stated that I had to graduate early. As it is I set things up so I'll be graduating early, but that's just because I want to get back to the real Navy instead of hanging around the NROTC unit for an extra 8 months.

Make sure that you are the last set of eyes to look at that...
Most admins don't know a whole lot about enlisted commissioning programs.

I can't agree with you more on the double check FMRAM. An administrative oversight by your command could be potentially disqualifying.

Also agree with FMRAM on the final check. The instruction says that the interview sheets shouldn't be seen by the candidate, but most commands are pretty cool about it. If admin whines about it, just have the career counselor go in and make a copy of the package for you to look at before they send it out.

I always thought that the main point of not letting us get hold of the finished package was to prevent any unathorised alterations that might just happen to make you look better. That's why we needed an escort when we went to the other command for our interviews. It's not like I was going to get lost on the pier or anything on the way to the other ship.

Like Spot said though, they had no problem making copies of everything for us before they mailed it off.

I'm sure that is part of it. But also, the admin peeps and some interviewing officers don't want you to know what they put on the interview sheets. Usually, the interviewing officers will tell you right up front how you did on your board. However, if you don't agree with one of the officer's marks, then shipping off the completed package without the candidate seeing it saves a possible confrontation or grudge.

Even if you cant see the comments of the members of the board, make sure you take a look at everything else...I would also make copies of the package in it's entirety, in case it is lost somewhere in the mail. On that same note, I would spend a couple of bucks and send the package Fedex with a delivery confirmation...saves alot of stress knowing that your package arrived on time. One last bit of advice is to print your package with resume paper...its expensive, but it feels thick, crisp, and will definatly be noticed.

All good suggestions. It also helps to be in good with at least one of the PC's wherever you are stationed. Their "Magic Postmark" comes in handy from time to time.

What is this "Magic Postmark" you speak of? Is that where it actually gets to it's destination on time? :icon_tong

Edit: Spelling

This is just a guess, but . . the PC's handle all the mail on the ship, and they are the ones who do the postmarking. So, lets say for some reason you were stupid and went to mail it on July 16th this year, well that just wouldn't work right? So, I'm guessing a thrifty person may be able to speak with a thrifty PC who happens to have a postmark that he forgot to move from July 15th when he stamps the package.

Just a guess, and I am in no way saying that anyone should be so dumb as to screw this one up, but to each his own I suppose.
