Howdy all,

After spending a year and $50,000 of my money at Embry-Riddle @ Daytona Beach, FL and after two attempts of trying to pick up a full NROTC scholarship, my third and final attempt landed me a full NROTC scholarship to Southern University @ Baton Rouge, LA. A Navy LT from the campus just called me, informing me that I received it.

I was just wondering if anyone goes or has gone to SUBR as well. If not, has anyone gone to one of the surrounding colleges, like LSU? I'm excited and looking forward to getting over there in a couple of days.

I haven't heard of them but congratulations on the scholarship, you're better off without ERAU anyways!!

ERAU sucked, been there done that back in 90-91. 2 girls to every 350 guys and they looked like guys. Daytona sucks.

Yeah, I shoulda listened to you guys before I went to Embry-Riddle. It sucked in just about every aspect, especially that guy to girl ratio. The only thing good that I walked away w/was getting my private pilot license from the premier flight school (or so they say).

The only experience I've had with Louisiana is driving through it a bunch of times. Other than that, I'm rather unfamiliar with the area.

Wow, I forgot about this thread.

So, a month later...Baton Rouge is a nice city, one of the nicer parts of Louisiana. If you're into the whole New Orleans thing, it's only an hour or two away by car. Gulfport/Biloxi (casinos) are a little over two hours away. Pensacola is about four to five hours. Memphis and Houston, about six. So there's plenty of places to check out that can easily be done over a weekend.

LSU is a respectable school, also know for their DAMN GOOD FOOTBALL. Also for showing up in the "Girls of the SEC" spread from time to time. They have a cross town agreement with Southern, another respectable school. Southern isn't as nationally known because it's aimed at a certain demographic. By that I mean it's a historically black college. And they are known for their kick ass marching band. It's been like that since I was a kid. I've met a couple of people who did MECEP/NROTC at Southern or LSU and most of them had good things to say. A few years ago they had an MOI who literally drove people out of the program and back to the fleet, but he's long gone and that could happen anywhere, it just turned out that Southern/LSU got their turn in the barrel that year. The two campuses aren't that far apart, but I don't know how long it takes to drive between them.

So anyway, if you want to live a normal college life, Baton Rouge is a good place to do it. I was there last summer for a friend's wedding, and for the last four or five years I've made it to at least one or two LSU games in Tiger Stadium every year. I don't think I'll be making a trip from Whidbey this year, though.
