surf on Whidbey Island?

Surfing at Whidbey? nope. I am no expert by any means when it comes to surfing but if you can handle water that cold and waves not much more than the wake of a large boat then go for it.
The weather there hovers around 55 degrees year round. In the summer months, you get 1 week that reaches in the 90's and very comfortable during those 3 months. The rest of the time it is raining. It's a light rain, heavier than a drizzle but light. The winds can get pretty brutal, especially at night.
It's better to have a snowboard or a good set of skis. There's a ton of places for that. Also, the best fishing in the world is right there in the Pugent Sound. The MWR there rents boats really cheap. Go out, drop some crab traps, get your limit on salmon and have a good fish fry. It's awesome.

How about windsurfing?! I'm just trying to get info on all the locations of naval air stations. I grew up surfing and have been out of the water for 3 years. I'm currently doing a four year stint with the Air Farce. Only 9 months left in Abilene, Texas, Thank God!!! I plan on applying for OTS with the Navy in the next couple of months and am doing my research on Navy towns and locations. I already know I want to fly. That's why I ask about Oak Harbor. I could possibly live there. I might be planning too far ahead and day dreaming, but that's what happens when you sit on alert for a week. You know anything about Brunswick, Maine surfing? I know its cold(freezing) but I'm a surfer at heart. They make wetsuits thick enough these days. It would take a lot to discourage me from staying out of the water. I am definitely into other outdoor activities like fishing, kayaking, etc..., but surfing is my favorite!!

I remember seeing a few people out there windsurfing. Kayaking is definitely a big thing as well. Plenty of places for it. I've never been to Maine so I can't give you any comparison there.

As for Whidbey, I grew up there and never remebering it being too windy as it was before my windsurfing days. You might look up weather trends for "the Island" online to see if it blows.......but I'm guessing its not going to average more that 6 or 7 knots. I cant say too much about other navy towns to my limited knowledge but keep dreaming I say! You never know!

I grew up in Dana Point, Ca. Surfing was a way of life there. Whidbey, no way, too rocky and the currents are so strong that I would never attempt it. Corpus is a great place to windsurf. It has the most wind of any other city in the US. In fact, the national windsurfing association is headquarted in Corpus. Occasionaly, ok surfing days but usually blown out. P'cola is about the same as Corpus but nicer beaches. Miramar, SoCal has great beaches but by far Camp Pendleton has some of the best surf in the US. Virginia Beach, Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune does have good days. Not like SoCal but the water is warm so you can hang longer. I don't have much experience around Jacksonville and Mayport but its probably pretty good. NAS Key West, no chance flat for surfing but good windsurfing. I won't comment on Hawaii. Yeah, I grew up most of my life in Ventura, CA. I was spoiled when it came to good surf. I have friends with a beach house at San Miguel Point in Ensenada. I'd go down there once a month for a couple of days. Also go surf "The Ranch"(Hollister) up north of Santa Barbara, and of course everything from Rincon to Malibu. Oh, what I would give to be 17 yrs old again!! I have only windsurfed a couple of times at Leo Carillo. I'm not so good at the windsurfing thing at all, but if it came down to NO surfing and just windsurfing, I would do it just to stay in the water. Like Frumby said, when you grow up around the ocean, surfing is a way of life and I had to get away from the ocean to finish school because 3 years ago you couldn't get me more than a day or two out of the water without getting the shakes from not surfing. I almost have my degree now and the Navy will give me the best of both worlds, fly KICK ASS aircraft and live near the ocean. Hell, I'll probably get more ocean than I want in the Navy!!
