Okay, I've always been one who believes you should look into every option available. So, when I found out that I could switch over to the Marine Corps while in the STA-21 program I figured I would take a look at the differences. And, ask a few questions.

First: As a pilot what are the leadership responsibilities? Meaning, what are the responsibilities beyond flying as a pilot in the Marine Corps?

Second: What is the rotation like or typical career path as an aviator in the Marine Corps? IE. First tour, second tour and so on...

Third: What are the platforms available to the Marines? I know the Harrier, Hornet, Cobra but what are the other platforms? (Note: I am not asking percentages, I realize that only God could tell me this and he's holding onto his cards in this case.)

That's really all I can think of right now, I'm certain to have more questions as I'm going along but I'll post those then. Thanks for any feedback.

I'll let the aviators talk about their flying experiences, but I'll do my best to answer some of your questions.

First of all, you are a Marine first and a ____ second. Leadership is EVERYTHING. There are tons of collateral billets, and you will be leading Marines at every turn. Heck, just wearing the brass on your collar identifies you as a leader to your enlisted Marines. It is non-negotiable. If you are at your NROTC unit (or when you get there) talk to the MOI or AMOI about what leadership means in the Marine Corps.

The basic platforms you might wind up in are jets (Hornets, Prowlers, Harriers), props (C-130), helos (Hueys, Cobras, 46s, 53s), and tiltrotor (Osprey). Again, I'll let the operators tell you about what they do.

If you want to jump over, do yourself a favor and investigate ALL aspects of being a Marine - not just the easy pilot contract.

First Kbay I appreciate your response.

Also, I understand that being an Officer (regardless of the branch) means being a leader. This is one of the main reasons that I went for the STA-21 program. And also the reason that I asked that particular question first.
