Switching from JAG Contract to Air Contract

JAG Contract

I graduated OCS and was commissioned a Marine officer last summer with a law contract. I am now in my third year of law school and from there will go to TBS to the Naval Justice School and the Fleet. Has anybody ever heard of anybody in my situation switching contracts post-commissioning to air?

Just so you all know that I'm not totally fickle, I was in law school because I wasn't confident that I could pass OCS. When I applied to go to OCS during my second year of law school, I passed the ASTB and I wanted to go air, but the last air slot was taken so I went to OCS on a ground contract. The OSO told me that I would be able to defer the commissioning for a year so I could finish up law school during which time I could switch contracts. However, at OCS they told me that they weren't allowing deferments any more so my options were to accept on the ground contract or decline the commission altogether. At the last minute, they offered me the law contract which I took since I preferred it to ground. Probably, I should have accepted the ground contract on the chance of getting into air at TBS.

I'm happy and proud of being a Marine officer whatever my MOS and look forward to going to TBS and the Fleet, but I just wondered if it was possible to make it just it little bit better.

I know of a guy from TBS who dropped his law contract and had to compete like everyone. He got the MOS he wanted but he was also sh!t hot(read: Top 1/3). So yes it is possible but you will have to compete with everyone else for the 2 or 3 air slots your company has. Goodluck, read the other threads about getting air at TBS.
From your post, you do not seem to mind.

Did your friend drop his law contract at TBS or before? Something I wouldn't like to happen is to drop my law contract and become ground and then find out at TBS that there aren't any air slots available or that I don't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting one.

He dropped it just before selection. You will know how many slots your company gets and you will also know who is interested. Just get your medical done before you report to TBS. It will make everything easier.
