I was curioius if any of the Marine aviators aboard this forum have attended the tactical air control party school. I understand it is a MOS producing school for pilots who will fill a FAC billet, but I was wondering if any other Marines attend. In particular, 0861 scout observers. I have heard the Corps is moving towards a universal spotter concept and was hoping you gentlemen may have some insight. I was hoping to get as much schooling as possible controlling the different fire support assets the Marine Corps has. I had heard that an enlisted FAC mos was being created, I believe because of Air Force success with their ETACs. Thanks for any insights available.

I guess I'm qualified to answer this question. First the school only generates a secondary MOS and not a primary. In general, pilots are the primary TACP school candidates but SEALs and Force Recon are also able to attend. As the Battalion Air Officer for 1/23, part of my job is to train the TACP Teams. The only people I have been authorized to send to school are aviators and no one else. I personally see to it that my communicators as well as the Scout Sniper platoon receives training from my shop. We train only for time of war in the event the FAC gets waxed and the enlisted Marine takes over. I'm unable at this time to let a non 7502 give a "Clear Hot" call. I can let him do all the planning and terminal guidance into the target area but a FAC has to make the "Cleared Hot" call. There has been rumor mill about the enlisted FAC MOS but I do not know how far the idea has advanced. Wish I could give you more insight. Frumby

Thank you sir. That pretty much answered my question. I was just hoping the Corps was being a bit more assertive in moving ahead in the universal spotter concept.
