take ASTB if not interested in aviation?

I've gotten my B.S. degree and i'm interested in joining the Navy as an officer. I had been studying for the asvab, but recently was told by a recruiter that I would be taking the ASTB (different recruiter i talked to told me to study for the asvab).

If my career interests within the navy have nothing to do with aviation. Why/will I still have to take the ASTB? All the aviation questions seems pretty irrelevent if your interest is intelligence or surface warfare.

You still need to take the ASTB so you can get your Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) which is used by Intel and SWO communities. You do not have to take the spatial reasoning or aviation/nautical knowledge sections. They are not factored into the OAR.

Do not take the ASVAB if you want a commission; that recruiter is most likely trying to get you to enlist. While cmquaker is correct (the OAR is computed from the different sections of the ASTB), the OAR score is used to determine eligibility for almost every (officer) community, not just intel and SWO.

Also, the ASVAB is for enlisted personnel not officers. The recruiter who told you to study that might be an enlisted recruiter. Make sure you are talking to an officer recruiter.
