I just took the new test 2 yesterday. I dont think that things went too well for me on this test. As scuttlebutt has been passed around, there are many typos, and from what my OSO says, all those questions have been thrown out. Also my OSO informs me that they have fixed the grading errors, and can now grade them via machines. They were having probloms with the grading algorithm, and were grading them by hand

I felt that they Gouge here on the site was almost useless for this new test. I only saw about 5 or 6 questions total that were somewhat similar to the gouge. My advice before taking it, is study an alegabra book before going into it. There were only 2 geometry questions I believe (the question was, what is the area of a triangle with 3 even sides measuring 3) there were a few questions that dealt with speed and distance in the math section, like if a car goes 40 mph for 15 mins, 30 mph for 10 mins, and 65 mph for 45 mins, how far did the car go?

as far as mechanical, mostly nothing like the gouge. the questions that threw me pretty badly showed a complex pulley system, and asked if the rope was pulled 1 foot, how far up would the object attached to the pulley go up? ANother question like it showed a tow truck attached to a pulley, and if the tow truck moved 18 feet, how far up would the oject be pulled? There was a question where it showed a big and little 3 pound block, and asked which one is going to float higher (kinda like the gouge study guide question)

SA.. well, its SA.. the ARCO book is great for studying those pictures. This was one of the only sections that I finished with minutes remaining, everything else was C'ing in the remaining questions when my OSO came in to tell me time.

One more thing that I can think of right now is that alot of the answers were grouped together.. Ex: there would be an ass load of A's, and a load of C's grouped together.. it seemed that rarely was the scantron sheet answers spread out. Did anyone else experience this?

If anyone has any more questions, you had better ask them soon before I forget them after a few more days.

study the arco books

In one of the two arco books that I had it gave me a question just like that. The two objects have equal weights but one is bigger right. The one which is bigger will float higher. As far as the pulley systems go, just divide or multiply by however many ropes are holding weight.

I found the test to be rather easy. The gouge does help. Not as much as it would have for the old test, but it helps. The new test has less arithmitec reasoning and more algebra based questions. Which I find to be much easier. The reading Comprehension questions are fairly easy. The the Nautical/Aviation is basic terminology.

Study the gouge, but also refresh your algebra and read up on basic aviation and nautical terminology and concepts and you should be fine.

I took the new test on thursday. Last time I took it (the old style form 2) I got a 58 7/7/7. I think I did much better this time. I took form 3. The math was cake, verbal was cake, the mechanical for me was a little tougher (a lot different then the gauge), but I would be suprised if I got more than one wrong on the math and on the verbal. Last time I believe I got 28 out of 30 mechanical right, but I do think I dropped a few more this time.
As far as Spatial, yes this was MUCH easier with 10 fewer questions. Aviation/Nautical the guage definitely helped out but there was some stuff in there that I did not know. (If a pilots two way radio breaks what frequency do they use 7500,7600,7700, or 7800. The question was something like that). A few other ones that I did not know, but most of it I did know and it was thanks to the guage on this site.
They will be grading the new ASTB's early next week either monday or tuesday. My recruiter told me he would call me and let me know how I did wednesday.

I almsot forgot, the only part I remember typos on were on the 6th section titled Aviation supplemental or something like that. I have no idea if they are grading this part, but it is filled with old quesions (exact questions) from the first 2 forms, and it is a mix of math, verbal, mechanical, and avaition/nautical. I would think they are not grading this part, especially with all the typos, but again I have no idea.

grading

They have just begun grading again. My OSO told me that they were having serious problems with the algorithm used for grading, but it was fixed last week by civilians. Previously they were grading the new ones by hand, but they can put them thru the machine now, so hopefully we will get some results soon. As far as grading the typoed sections, all questions that had typos have been thrown out, but from what my OSO says, the grading center still has the correct answer in the system, so If you get it right, its kinda like a complete quess in the dark extra credit, but if you put something and its wrong, it doesnt count against you.

I hope that if I have to retake the exam, the form I take will go alittle bit better. You know how it is though. After you get done taking something really big, you arent as confident as you mabey should be.

Im getting nervous...

I have been studying and studying for the ASTB, I am taking it on Thursday. Although I have been studying with two books other than the ARCO. One is made my CliffsTestPrep, and the other is from Learning Express, both to me seemed quite informative but from what you guys describe these books are way harder than what you keep explaining. In these books the SA part seems a lili tricky and almost like you need a ruler to see if the horizon is level or not, the mechanincal section recalls stuff like moments of inertia, conservation of momentum, equations of kinematics; and the math is all arithmetic reasoning and no algebra. Does this sound right and could someone break down the test simply for me? Thanks.

It sounds like your books are a start in the right direction. The math section however was almost all alegebra and and couple geometry questions. The mechanical part you seem to be studying sounds alittle extreme. As long as you have a good head on your shoulders, you should do fine. The only thing that may seem a bit hard cause there is no way to really study for it, was the aviation portion, where it asks about frequencies, and aviation questions that 99.9% of people dont really know. The spacial, my experience is that if you study the arco portion, you will do fine. of the 5 choices on the test for each picture, only 2 will make sese, like 3 will show it going out to see, and 2 in land, then just decide which direction its going. Dont sweat the going up or down, its pretty easy. I gave quite a few test questions when I started this thread, you should look at those. good luck to you!

thanks

E5M,

Thanks for the advice. I figured that the mechanical section in these books was quite extreme, I mean I have taken calculus based physics for two semesters and still couldnt remember some of these pittly ass details. My OSO also told me that the Aviation/Nautical section is what really gets everyone everywhere, so that should be my main importance of study. I have one more question, on the mechanical section how many choices do you have, one of my books says two, the other says three but in the practice test lists five? Thanks a lot.

I just took the test thrs and on the mechanical section I believe that almost all of them had 4 choices. Its kind of funny, its the petty little crap that makes the difference. I have taken up to calc also, but working out all of the alegebra probloms takes time. Oh sweet sweet precious time.. good luck on your test, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
as far as the aviation portion, I too hear that is the money maker.. Its got ALOT of things that most people would never know. EX: runway light colors, squak frequencies, wingtip vorticies, etc.. Its tough to remember them all, but its things like that.

the grading for OAR is 0-80 right? And the rest is 1-10? It seems to me that 7's about average right?

I just took the new form 3 today, and the mechanical section had 3 choices to choose from. I thought it was easier than that section of form 2. I wish I would have found this site before I took form 2 rather than 3, my life would have been much less stressful.

OAR is from 20-80, and the other three stats are from 1-9, and 7's on this section are good, but depending on your overall package may need better 8's and 9's.
