First I want to say kudos to everyone here helping people like me. Hope I will be able to return the favor if I get where I want to be.

> I am going to start freshman year at ERAU (Aero Eng.) and had originally sought after NROTC but was denied and all that good stuff. With grants I will only have to pay about 40000 for four years so Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program could be a better turn out without having to do NROTC weekly things.

Q> If i am interested in this BDCP should I stay away from NROTC or can I apply for BDCP while in freshman year of NROTC? is it just as difficult to get a NROTC scholarship as getting into BDCP? am I over looking a stupid angle?

Cheers

No problem atall doing NROTC college program and applyinng for BDCP a few years in.

Very good way to hedge your bet if this is something you really want to do.

If you cant get in off the street and you didnt do ROTC, you are simply out of options, this way you have a fall back.

Especially the way airlines are these days.. commercial flying isnt exactly the best plan b. Id leave that to plan C.

Lemme know how that goes for ya. Im thinkin they might be looking for pilots with about 20,000 more hours then you.

I would expect 2 years to play it safe, considering wait time and apllication process, etc.

Qualified technical majors can receive a salary of at least $2,242 per month for up to 3 years prior to graduation and qualified non-technical majors can receive this salary for up to 2 years prior to graduation.

so I would imagine that I could apply for sophmor year... yeah the waiting, true. But that is still off the point, as long as I can apply while still in NROTC thats great. THanks

20000... hmmmm... i guess THAT will have to be plan C

One benifit of doing NROTC while applying to BDCP is you might be able to get a LOR from the PNS (an active duty O-6).

Also, if you start NROTC college program and get picked up for BDCP, you may consider staying around going to NROTC classes and labs with the unit, could pick up some things about the navy that might help beyond OCS.

...Commercial flying... lord no... rather work for (*insert anything else here*) ...
Funny ... that's what everyone says ... until the airlines start hiring. We've had boom and bust scenarios before in airline hiring -- we'll have them again when the current bust is history.

But when the doors open; it's "Please, please, please !!! Take me !! Take me !!! I've ALWAYS wanted to work for this airline --- airline X, Y, or Z!!!" :icon_wink

It never changes ...

I'd say try out NROTC. You can't apply until you are within 24 months of graduation (I'm assuming you're doing a worthless commercial aviation type of degree.) You can get the application all ready, but it will not be submitted until then. If you hate ROTC, you can leave after a semester or so. Also, you can reapply for scholarships later on once you get known, leadership, high GPA, blah blah blah. This means you will still have to prove yourself. High school activities were nice, but I would say if you wanted to try BDCP, get involved in clubs and become an officer, like say dorm government, local flying nerd club, airplane gangbang, etc. in college.
