Tiger Cruise?

Does anyone know the origins of the Tiger Cruise? I know it has many urban-legend-esque stories, but I'm sure someone like A4s would have been around for the first one. ;)

I guess specifically my question is: where does Tiger come from?

was that the screamin Eagles? I hung out in VF-111's ready room a bunch for some reason...I cant remember. My father was the OPS O of the ship for that cruise...right before he retired. I'm sure our fathers ran into each other along the way....hell they might have been friends.

I'll ask the commander when he comes in this morning if he knows the origins of this. I never asked why they were called tigers when I was aboard the last carrier I worked on, but something quite amusing was when they first told me tigers were aboard, I couldn't quit thinking (silently of course) why they were carrying exotic wildlife aboard a ship. Then when I went down to birthing, one of the female AVCM's was helping one through a terrible bout of sea sickness, and I realized what an actual tiger was. Good thing I kept my mouth shut. I've learned that it only takes one time of messing up something around a sailor, and you will have someone to pick on you for a lifetime about it.

The tiger cruise is a great deal for family members or friends, are they still doing it? My little brother did a tiger cruise on my 95-96 westpac aboard the USS Peleliu LHA-5 and he had the time of his life. He was 14 at the time and got to do all kinds of stuff like hang out in Hawaii for 3 days, shoot the M-2 off the side of the ship, shoot the SAW from the flight deck, did a beach landing on an LCU back to Pendleton etc etc.

Whoever thought of the "Tiger Cruise" should get an award or something. It's an experience of a lifetime for a kid brother or cousin.

I bet the security nazis have nixed the whole tiger cruise thing.
That would really suck. I volunteered twice to be on the Dets we sent for Tiger Cruises. One on Independence and one on Forrestal. I don't know who had more fun, those of us on the det or the Tigers. Spent an entire evening showing the Tigers thru our helos. See the look on a 14 year old kids face when you flip on the battery switch and the cockpit lights up. PRICELESS!

Girls couldn't go in the '80's. I have serious issues stemming fr that, best thing I have is Family Day for the Nassau in July of '91.

BTW, call these people if you really wanna know

Well, since none of us know the answer, we are just skirting the issue by making closely related posts.
