I searched but couldn't find anything...

Basically, I was wondering about aircraft getting assigned to a boat (amphibious assault ship or carrier). First of all, is it the kind of thing you get a say in ("please put/don't put me on a boat"), or does it just fall down to chance and needs? Second, is it popular/unpopular?

Thanks...

It depends on many things- what do you fly? Most Helos have a pretty good chance of going on the boat as do Harriers. Single Seat Hornets will be going two seaters not much.
The boat is what it is some good some bad. Some people like it some like to be land base dbut teh bottom line is needs of the Corps.

Me? I fly a kite...

I was just wondering how people felt about it and if they wanted it, get it (boat time, that is...).

Thanks for responding.

Just speaking in generalities (not as a pilot but just as a guy on a boat).....

The boat is another one of those things that you hated but are glad you did. Spending months straight at sea looking at the same bunch of clowns every single day, things start to get a little tense....i.e. "Hey, man, what time is it?"....."*** YOU! GET A WATCH, YOU LAZY ****!"
I mean, I grew up working on a dairy farm, and on deployments I ended up going places like Egypt, Canary Islands, Spain, Malta, Italy, Israel, Turkey, Jordan, and one or two others. I was on two LHDs, Kearsarge ('97) and Bataan ('99-'00). Plenty of different exercises in different countries, pilots were loving life because they were flying all the damn time. The techs were working incessantly but making up for it in port (the pilots were, too, for that matter).
Also depending on your hobby, being on a ship is somewhere you can really bury yourself in a hobby to occupy what little free time you have and make things less miserable. I play drums and was fortunate enough on both boats to meet other people who played, so we put together crappy little cover bands that played in different ports. All we got out of it was our own enjoyment and a little free beer. In both cases, the guys I played music with came back, wrote some songs, recorded CDs, and asked me to record with them. So that worked out for me. If you're a golfer, we had people taking clubs and playing in different places. Weightlifters love having a 24 hr gym and not much else to occupy their time. Runners, not so much. So there are things you can do to entertain yourself while you're gone. It just depends on the situation, boat, squadron, etc.

If you have any more specific questions than, 'what's it like?' there are plenty of people 'round here who have done time on different ships and would be willing to help you out. Good luck.

My class and I find out on the 4th of May what platform we will be going....I asked for hornets so I can have a shot at going back to the boat. Carrier quals was the greatest experience of my short life.

Why would Hornets be your only shot at going back to the boat?

I will have to agree with Crowbar. I grew up in Mississippi hardley seeing anything. Half the reason I joined the service was to get a look into the world I never knew. Well, I got that, I was able to see countries which I never dreamed of, like Singapore, Thailand, China( Hong Kong ) Taiwan, Japan, Austrailia, amongst others. I know that it helps with you career too to have sea time, in the sense it makes you more competative with all the other guys trying to get the job they want later on in their career. You should want to be on a boat, especially while you are young and single, and even if you are not single, then you can get cool trash for your family.
Good Luck,
Sgt Dube

I have yet to deploy as a pilot, but like Crowbar and sgtdube, I also deployed as an enlisted Marine. By the time you set sail for that 6 month cruise, boat life won't be anything new. You're unit will do what's called "work-ups" which is nothing more than being on ship for 1-3 weeks at a time ending with a huge assault. So by the time you leave for the no-joke deployment, you've already determined where your bunk is (state room for officers) and know your way around the ship. I did 2 west-pacs on an LHA and believe me, that thing is big enough to get lost on a time or two. The first two weeks are the hardest, and longest. Once you get past those it's all down hill. On both deployments we hit Hawaii during the 3rd or 4th week for some training. On our way to the Persian Gulf we'd usually hit a few Liberty ports: Singapore, Hong Kong, PI...just to name a few. I also brought a guitar on ship. The ship had it's own band and equipment and the Marines had our band and used their equipment. It was a good time playing for the troops at ports and steal beach parties. If you don't know how to play spades, you will on ship. I've never slept so much or read so many books in that amount of time.... Patience does wear thin though, just like Crowbar mentioned. The worst part is the laundry....everyone hangs their laundry bag from their rack and right before laundry day it gets pretty rank in there. Those who don't shower regularly seem to surface quickly...just like a turd floating to the top. Best advice I was givin while on ship is Make sure you get outside at least once a day to get some fresh air!

Just like sgtdube mentioned, deployments are where you get your experience and 'stories'. Heck I was 19 years old and had already been to 12 different countries while my highschool buds were still cruising the streets back home listening to Pearl Jam and Snoop Dogg.

I had a bud who looked for a blow-up doll at every port...seems the Asians aren't big into it. Anyway, he planned on pimping it out while on ship. The guy was such a phreek, the crazy thing was, he was serious.

If anything else.....deploy so you can see Thailand or Bali.....craziest times of my life!!!!
