To apply or not??

Well I am new to the forum but I have been reading posts here for the past week. I have been considering apllying for the Navy for the flight options. The problem has been that I keep going back and forth about if I should fill out the application and everything that goes with it or not. Here's what I am dealing with to give everybody a little background about myself.

I graduated from Auburn University with 2 undergraduate degrees in 2004, 1 in Aviation and 1 in Logistics. My undergraduate GPA was a 2.8. I am currently pursuing an MBA part-time by taking two classes per semester.

I work full-time in the transportation industry and have been married for almost 3 years. I have some previous flight experience, but it has been a few years since I have last been up and flying.

I have spoken with the recruiter for the NROTC program at Auburn as well as the OCS recruiter out of Montgomery,AL. I have all the paperwork that needs to be filled out, but haven't done anything with them yet.

I have always wondered what it would be like to be a Naval Aviator and recently discovered the NFO field as well. If I chose to apply, these would be my top two choices. One of the biggest problems I see is being away from my wife for the 2 years while I am in training.

Has anybody been through a situation like this or possibly have some advice? Thanks for the help!

Why can't she live with you?

There is no reason why she couldn't once OCS was over and training began at NAS Pensacola, it would just mean packing her up and her leaving everything that we already have established here. Mainly her job and ambition of being a college coach.

Well 10 years down the road would you regret not even trying? If it's something you want to do, do it. You only live once.

Most War Eagles would argue but there are colleges elsewhere. My wife is a pharmacist and finds good employment wherever we are. You two need to get on the same wavelength or she needs to let you know that you do not wear the pants.:D

Fixed that for you. :D

To the OP, sounds like you have done your research on the topic. I would encourage you to apply, you lose nothing by applying, you can always turn it down in the end. If you have any other questions I'm sure between AW, your recruiter or the staff at the Nichols Center, someone can find you the answer.

Good Luck and War Eagle.

Thanks for the advice so far, everything inside me keeps saying to atleast go ahead and send in the application. Besides the regular application, letters of reccomendation, and test score, does anything else need to be done?

For the letters of reccomendation is it best to find people with military backgrounds, or would anybody work?

The letters of recommendation have more weight if they are military, but it is BEST if they are from people that know you very well and can write well.
The purpose of the LoRs, as you probably know, is to show the selection board the side of you that isn't reflected in your grades and statistics.
They look for the "Whole Person" concept, and LoRs contribute to that a lot.

You can get a sense of what's ahead by digging into the forum. Don't think NROTC recruiter can do anything for you at this point since you've graduated. Like others have said, why leave wife behind? She can be a big supporter for you if she's ready to move several times or join you once you know where you're heading after Pensacola.

Speaking on this, where are the NAS's that people get sent to after Pensacola? I have looked around but all I can find is that you will be sent to a base close to your designated area. It would be interesting to know what the locations would be.

WOW. You won't be sent to a base close to your designated area. You get sent where the Navy needs you. You put in your preferences, but in the end of the day - it's the Navy's decision to make. I'm a Marine, so I'm not the smartest - but off the top of my head some NAS's are:

Lemoore, CA
Whidbey Island, WA
North Island, CA
Oceana, VA
Jacksonville, FL
Mayport, FL
Guam somewhere
Japan somewhere
Hawaii (I actually think that they're at the MCAS there)...

I'm sure some Navy guys could chime in with a bit more detail...
