Thanks!

I had references and, separately, about 10 family members for the family history section. Wasn’t sure if everyone needed a heads up since I gave their names.
Who you list as references for your investigation is really unimportant. They will find ways to explore friends of friends and other associations you may have had or currently have.

They’ll talk to people you don’t list as references and family members. They’ll talk to landlords, and your weird next door neighbors too.
So is it best practice to just tell as many people as a heads up, or let the chips fall where they may - and whoever answers the phone answers?

Why tell anyone? That isn’t required. The investigators are well versed in explaining what they’re doing and what it’s for When they contact people.

If you listed a close and continuing contact or a professional reference, then yes - I would let those people know. But for everyone else, you have no idea who will be contacted or when so I wouldn't worry about it.

Yeah I don't think a heads up is needed at all. I probably gave my close friends/family a courtesy "just so you don't get freaked out", but even that is not really necessary. I probably only did that because a lot of my older friends from college and before aren't exactly the types that are super chill with getting a message from "special agent so and so" out of the blue. And I wanted them to cooperate, rather than ignore/hide from the investigator.

I can't remember how many times I'd come back from a flight as an IP and someone would be waiting for me investigating a student in Advanced. I think a lot of the time, they weren't even my on-wings, just someone I flew with a couple of times and I guess I was deemed a non-asshole.

Just hope you don't get the lady that did @webmaster's last investigation. She was very "special."
