I am a staff corp officer in Navy investigating the possibility of transfer to USMC for aviation. Any thoughts on where to find information on how to do this? Thank you.

I have 1 and a half years left in my obligation to staff corps. I was wondering if a USMC transfer has same requirement as a lateral transfer in Navy (mandatory 24 months before can apply for transfer from Staff to URL). Thanks.

Like someone said, contact your local OSO.

You have to wait until the end of your obligated (AD) term before any inter-service transfer can happen.

Donker,

If you don't want to wait out your time in the Navy, why not just do a lat transfer to pilot/NFO? There's less red tape, plus you won't have to shell out for the Marine Unis. Was there a specific reason you wanted to go Marine Air?

How are you Thisguy,
No specific reason other than just want to fly. I am putting together a package for Navy pilot. I have been in discussion with a 3 star that thought a waiver might exist for the mandatory 24 month active duty requirement (per BUPERS instruction). It's looking more like that may not be the case. At any rate, I can wait it out for another year and put in for pilot.

Donker,

For what it's worth, that 24 month rule isn't as strict as it seems. I've got a package in for this November's board, even though my 2 year mark is in december. The CEC Accessions O said it wasn't a big deal, and that ENS's have applied before.

The tricky part is with your command, notifying your DH, XO, CO that you want to lat transfer. If they're on board, it's no problem. You sound like you've only been in a short time, so that might be trickier. If I were you, I'd go ahead and take a stab at the May/June 2005 board, what's the worst that could happen? They say no? Then you're right where you were anyway.

Also, you won't have to attend TBS - "The Big Suck" is you stayed Navy!
