Transfer

I just finished my service commitment, non-pilot Air Force, as a young O-3 coming up on 5 years total. Anyways, I'm looking for advice first on how realistic is my goal of becoming a marine aviator? Second, how do I start the process?

Its doable through an inter-service transfer, although a little more complicated than traditional routes. silversnake requested a transfer to Navy, hopefully he'll add more info. As far as I know you'll still need to attend Marine OCS. Contact your local OSO ASAP -- you may have to go for an age waiver, but since you're prior you have a good chance of getting it. You'll start off by filling out at rough application, giving the OSO a copy of your transcripts, running a Physical Fitness Test, and taking the ASTB (commonly called the AIR test). From there they will submit your package to the next board. You'll be going for OCC, which is a 10-week course in Quantica, VA. Age could be an issue but I believe the age-waiver can work for you there. I don't know all the details here.. but I'm sure that someone with more experience than me will chime in.

not too eduated on matter but.....

my cousin is a USNA grad and recently returned from iraq after working with anglico and has turned in his paperwork to transfer to the Marines, he said it can take anywhere from 3-6 months before its approved (by SecNav...not positive) if it's approved he then has to attend TBS not OCC. We're hoping we end up at TBS together.....

Thanks for the info. I guess my first stop will be to the OSO and on from there but my next question is, what is an OSO? If you have any info or experiences please let me know.

Marine Officer Selection Officer. Should be able to find one in the phone book. If needed, you can ask a Marine recruiting office and they should know where one is in the area. Good luck!

I suggest that your best bet would be to speak with a Marine Prior-Service Recruiter. You could reach them by going to:
http://www.Marines.com
...selecting Prior Service, and filling out the form, or by calling:
1-800-MARINES

Any Veteran of another branch of the Armed Forces wishing to become a Marine must first successfully graduate from Marine Corps Boot Camp, and it's highly unlikely they will graduate from Boot Camp at a rank higher than Lance Corporal (E3) - unless they had something written into their contract to that effect (even more unlikely.)

If a Commissioned Officer, I would suggest contacting a Marine OSO (Officer Selection Officer) - they should be listed in your telephone book. If the person considering the transfer is a Naval Officer who graduated from the Naval Academy, it may be possible to transfer directly - the OSO would know for certain. Everyone else would first need to graduate from various Marine Officer training courses given at MCB Quantico, VA.
