United 93

Just saw United 93, thought it was interesting. Personally I think it was too early for Hollywood to be making a movie about this, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Showed alot of things about Air Traffic Control and what not. I think it kinda made the Air Force and NORAD look like a bunch of idiots.

Just curious and not taking a swipe at you....but if you thought it was too early to make the movie, why did you go?

I think it's an unnecessary dramatization of a tragedy and therefore I'm not going.

HAL, I think you may be basing your opinions off of what the advertisers want you to think, and not what the movie really is. First up, I haven't seen it yet, just for the record.

I know you may be closer to the events than I, but I'd recommend you read the review by Roger Ebert (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060427/REVIEWS/60419006). One of his first comments is that the movie trailer completely distorts what the the movie really is. Apparently, for his perspective (and other stuff I've read), they did it "right." There isn't much drama, other than the actual events of that day. There's no backstory, no politics, just describing the events as we know them. It's also interesting that a lot of the "actors" in the movie are played by the real people (ATC and such).

As for the military looking like a bunch of buffoons...well, no one knew what was going on, and the system just wasn't set up the way it is now.

Anyway, I'm interested in seeing the movie and giving it a fair shake because it sounds like it's much more than it could have been.

gatordev,

Maybe I'm too bias against all the Hollywood directors that like to rewrite history to suit their view of the world/politics. Too many poeple watch a movie and think that was the way it really happened.

Maybe if in a few weeks the reviews and comments on this movie prove me wrong I'll take a chance and see it.

I have not seen the movie. I don't see too many these days ... a waste of my time. :)

I heard a radio interview yesterday with the producer, Paul Greengrass. He was, shall we say ... "incoherent" ... when asked simple questions such as: "why did you make the movie?" ... or "what is the message you would like us to take away from the movie?" ... simply incoherent.

On the other hand ... I am in favor of almost ANYTHING that will remind us how impotent and unprepared we were on that terrible day, and what an evil malignancy we are fighting.

Americans have one big, big failing. We forget too soon ..... i.e., we have a short attention span.

Never again, I hope.

I don't know... I'd see the movie before I said anything for or against it. Maybe people should see it if they need to refresh their memory (maybe NOT...)

I might see it this weekend, but I have no idea what to expect.

It showed alot of things I wasn't really aware of, I had no clue there was THAT much confusion going on, between the FAA and the other agencies, it was obvious there was a disconnect, that was really what the movie was really about, not so much the dramatic fact of the towers falling and 9/11 itself.

Samsonite... I was WAY off!!
I haven't seen it either although I wanted to go see it last night but the gf dragged me to that "stick it" movie... you want to talk about a waste of time.

I heard a good point yesterday about the too early mindset. If it was too early to make this film, then why was it not too early for Fahrenheit 911?

Just a thought...

I'll give it a fair shake. Agree with A4's it's good for us to refresh our memories... local reviewers have said no one left the theatre without tears in their eyes...

On another note, I think the various (history/ discovery/ discovery times/ military channels) documentaries on the events of the day are very well done. Saw one last night on how the FAA grounded every flight and how we had thought there were some Asian inbound to the West Coast flights we also thought were hijacked and how we passed it on to the Canadians and how their tiny rural airport dealt with a potentially hijacked 747. Most superb was the entire history of 9/11 and how Bin Laden and Co. got the whole idea and what he was claiming to fight the U.S. for, all the training of the actual hijackers, how they got in, their mistakes and breaks, etc., and then the actual events of 9/11. The Flight 93 one was also great and very professionally done I thought as well... Both were set up with none to minimum politics, just straight facts set up in a timeline manner.

I don't recall all too much from that doculie but I remember it more focusing on how Bush sucks and not the actual events of 9/11.
