Universities That Don't Have GPAs

Not sure if this has been asked before, but the search system won't let me search for a term with just 3 letters (GPA). Anyways, what would you put down as your GPA if you went to a university that didn't have GPAs? The system worked like this: You have to receive at least a 3 out of a 4 scale to pass a class. No scores or anything are shown on the transcript except Pass/Fail. Is it possible to just leave the GPA field blank?

Are you sure that a school lacking a GPA scale is accredited?

UCSC doesn't do grades (at least they didn't used to). They gave you the option of a more standard system on our transcript for situations like this. Ask your registrar's office.

My school had s WAG vice GPA. Registrar office provided a letter stating what my 87.9 WAG converted to on a 4.0 scale.

WAG? My usage and your school's usage must be significantly different.

I WAGged most of my tests when I was in college. Now I'm in the Navy. Still not sure who won that battle.

St. John's College in Annapolis, MD doesn't really give grades either. They only award BA in Liberal Arts, and they use a great books program. They're viewed as one of the best schools in the country, and the SAT scores of the incoming freshman are generally 620-730 Verbal and 560-690 Math.

They're accredited.

For the OP, St John's doesn't use grades either, but at the request of the student they will provide a transcript that is on a standard 4.0 scale.

I can just picture Phrogpilot73, lounging on the lawn on College Ave, bare footed and playing hackey sack with his hemp pull over.

I know the SAT scores are different now, so I'm assuming your using old score numbers as your gauge, but those don't seem that high. My SAT scores were nothing special and that's about what I made (on the low end). I SJC is well-respected, so I figured their scores would be more than that.

OP: I'm sure your college has a system for converting their system to GPAs. Yours is not a unique problem...it's the same for all the folks going on to grad school, etc. Talk to the Dean's office.

Hardly. About the most exposure I had to St. John's was mocking them during march over for football games, getting drunk on their lawn during the annual croquet game, and encountering them in one of my favorite bars. I talked to a lot of them during my four years at USNA, and the program does fascinate me - I'd just never survive...

I got them from their website, it seems as though they haven't updated them since the changes have been made to a 2400 point scale with three sections. If you really dig into their admissions standards - they put less emphasis on the SAT and grades, and put more importance on essay and admissions interviews. It makes sense, since theirs is a very unique academic program.

Edit - and reading up on the old SAT score system, they're scoring between the 72nd and 97th percentile.

What a pleasant surprise; I didn't expect so many responses so quickly, haha.

Yes, it's regionally and nationally accredited...

Here's what alumni services had to say:
"As there are many institutions that do not offer a GPA, you should be able to leave that box blank and attach a letter of explanation to your submission materials. "
:(
I'm going to check with records & the registrars office to see if I could get a score :/

That's effed up. If that's really how they do, I'd insist on a letter from them, on letterhead and expensive paper, the works, explaining their system. A letter from you doesn't do much.

If you leave the GPA block empty on the application it will be rejected, I have encountered this issue and so far ever registrars office has had the ability to convert what they do to GPA, I will tell you of the ones I have done not a single person has been accepted to OCS, not to say it hasn't happened but I haven't seen it.

I got into BDCP 12+ years ago with no GPA, but the school sends a letter in addition to having the approximate conversion printed on the backside of the transcript.
