University's and the OCS board.

Hi there everyone,

I was just wondering if the OCS board takes any consideration on where you go to school? Is it better to go to big name school, or is it just who has better scores and they don't care where they are from?

Robert,

I have never sat on a Navy OCS selection board, so I cannot say with any certainty if going to a "big name school" has any bearing on the strength of your application.

That being said, no matter what university or academic major you choose, taking the time to master English writing skills (particularly grammar and spelling) will pay dividends during your career as an officer.

One of the officers I sat down with for an interview used to sit on the selection boards. He said that they do in fact take into consideration where you earned your degree from. I don't believe that going to a "Tier 1" (his term) school gives you an excuse for a lower GPA, but rather it along with a competitive GPA, give you an advantage.

Agree, above average GPAs from Harvard, Stanford, MIT et. al., are eye-raisers compared to similar grades from 'lower tier' institutions. Whether board members are aware of this or not, it's human nature. The question: is it worth the higher tuition? It certainly gives a considerable advantage on a civilian job search resume.

Sorry for the bad spelling and missing words! I'm still getting used to this IPad, sometimes I type to fast for it to keep up. That being said I definatly should have re-read my post a second time! It was 50/50 human error slash new Ipad! Thank you for pointing it out though, I must say I probably don't have the best grammar as a math/ physics major but I try my hardest. :)

I thought it might have played a factor, but I wanted to make sure. I live in Michigan and go to Eastern Michigan University, which is like five minutes from U of M ( one of the two major schools in Michigan ). So needless to say I don't go to a Tier 1 school, so I didn't know if I was at to much of a disadvantage.

Do you think I will be at to much of a disadvantage, not coming from a Tier 1 school?

I went to California State University, Chico, most definitely a tier 2 school at best. I graduated with a 3.2 GPA and a degree in Construction Management and was pro-rec for both SNA and SNFO. Make sure to put together the best application possible with strong letters of recommendation and put in serious effort to do as well as possible on the ASTB.

FIFY...

Not really, perhaps '~somewhat' in an unusual tossup tiebreaker situation, bigger advantage for "tier-1" in the civilian business world.;)

Yeah I think you're worrying about it too much. You've got a decent GPA so that helps. Just work on highlighting your strongest attributes.

FWIW I was selected with a 3.3 out of the University of Southern Mississippi. I'll let you figure out which "tier" it falls under. ;)

FIFYx2.

Keep working on spelling-punctuation-grammar. KBay is spot on, it's a hard requirement that a Naval Officer be an excellent writer. This skill is closely observed and evaluated by reporting seniors, and are considered in periodic fitness reports!

You are completely right every time I think about applying or anything related ( which is all the time ) I start worrying. But it's definitely nice to see someone who got selected and wasn't from a Tier 1 school.
