Does anyone know anything about the chances for Marine pilots (jets, props, or helos) to be selected for higher education programs through the Marines? Specifically, does anyone know the chances of being Selected for the Legal Education Programs (either Funder Legal Education or Excess Leave (law))? Any answers or experiences with this stuff would be really helpful.

We have some Marines here at the Air Force Institute of Technology getting their master's degrees. The two who I am most familiar with are both helicopter pilots (CH-46 and Cobra) getting their masters in aeronautical engineering who are going on to Test Pilot School. Being Navy, I don't understand the process for being selected in the Marine Corps but I'm sure if you're in the community, you'll find out how.

It is very possible to get an advanced degree. There's SEP, which req a payback tour, i.e. much time out of the cockpit. Also, the Maj-level PME resident schools offer master's in security studies, or something similar. If you do the law programs, you will end up a JAG, which most pilots aren't that interested in, outside of TV. I've never know anyone to do that, not to say it's impossible. Also, the Corps will give you money to pursue a master's or other degree part-time.
