USMMA is shoo-in for Naval Aviation

Hey guys, not many people know about the US Merchant Marine Academy when talking about Federal Service academies. Seniors who were interested in active duty, more specifically flight all got billets.

Around 31 applied for Pilot/NFO
Around 27 got pilot and 4 for NFO

Even people with 5's and 6's for Pilot mostly got it.

Ask me anything about this place, or the process here, it's a unique one for sure. I will get a license to sail any gross tonnage ship out of this school but will have it on pause while I go to flight school. I have also been to sea for 330 days on a commercial ship as a Deck cadet. Unique experience for sure.

About 5, all who applied got it. Most of the people here fufill their service obligation by sailing comercially on their license and do Navy Reserve time as Strategic Sealift Officers instead of active duty. They will walk out of here as licensed mariners in Deck or Engineering which makes them valuable assets in the fleet as SWOs.

Who will do everything possible to NOT take advantage of their training and run them into the ground.

The SSO guys I’ve met have all generally been good dudes. Maybe because no one understands what they do here? StinkyPinky (HA! Awesome.) is right on the money though. Definitely a good and unconventional way into the cockpit. Plus the license doesn’t hurt as a backup life plan. Had a roommate who was a Cal Maritime grad and ended up being a COD bubba. Still loving life these days.
