USS Intrepid air musuem in New York City

This was briefly referenced in an earlier thread (http://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php?t=134273&highlight=intrepid) but I felt I would bring it up again because the USS Intrepid just received a $115 million overhaul and is being visited by President Bush today. The carrier is located at Pier 86 on the Hudson river.

I'm definitely gonna go visit this. It sounds awesome. Here are some of the aircraft on display.

Intrepid was in sorry shape when I visited her in 2000. I hope she comes out in as good of shape as Midway did. (BTW.. the Lex's condition was deplorable as well... I hope she is fixed up).

It's a damn shame how some of these ships have ended up. I was a tour guide on the USS Olympia in Philly throughout high school (oldest all steel warship in existence), and she would run aground every low tide because the museum was unable to raise the money to dredge her berth properly, not to mention the multiple holes in the hull. We would routinely come across dead fish during bilge walkthroughs. Dedicated staff, but not nearly enough financial support.

Contrast that with the New Jersey (BB-62) directly across the river, which I also worked on. Huge crew of volunteers, many of whom had served aboard her, constantly crawling all over the ship, coupled with a great advertising/fund raising campaign, made for a well maintained ship and a well run museum.

The saddest part about the whole thing? We lose irreplaceable pieces of history.

I've spent new years on the New Jersey and it is something else, I'm planning to go see the Intrepid with the family while I'm home for Thanksgiving break, I heard they did a really great job on it and it looks amazing from what I've seen on the news. Pretty pumped to go see it.

I'm checking out the Intrepid this Christmas break. Can't wait.
The New Jersey is pretty cool too but lacking (obviously) in the Aviation department.
