Two quick questions for you Prowler guys out there. How many jets do you have in a squadron and how many pilots are in a squadron?

4 jets (except VAQ-136 in Japan who has 5), and typically 6-7 pilots. A squadron will generally maintain 6 aircrews.

Wow, that's it? No wonder you guys are always busy. If you can answer, how many of those are actually up at any given time?

Yeah but for every pilot, you've got 3 ECMOs. That makes for approx. 24 aircrew, where legacy Hornet guys are doing business with significantly less. I would say your average at home flight schedule is a 2T2T2, sometimes more. You can, on average, count on one jet being down for some kind of maint. On det or deployment you can get into some fairly crazy cyclic ops where you're either flying, planning or sleeping.

wow you guys are small, we need 54 pilots just to fill all the seats in a squadron. Msut be tough to get out that Division leader check with 4 birds.

Not particularly. We don't fly division everyday - not really part of our tactics, but getting 4 jets airborne is no problem. We also work pretty closely with the other Q squadrons to borrow jets or aircrew as necessary to get things done. Our size does have its advantages. Our DH screen rates are among the highest in Naval Aviation.

Definitely, our command rates are woefully low based on such a huge population and so few slots.
