Waiting on Final Select, ok to go on trip out of the country?

I was pro req at the March 4th SWO board. I have no idea when final select letters will be coming out but I dont believe I will be leaving for OCS until august or later. My recruiter mentioned a while back that once you receive your final select letter you have a certain amount of days to swear in. Is this true?

I have the opportunity to go on a free trip to Europe for three weeks at the end of May/beginning of June and I would love to go. I am worried that I will get a call from my recruiter when Im gone telling me I need to swear in with in the next few days and i will have to come up with an expensive early plane ticket home.

I am going to talk to my recruiter about this soon and see if there is a way to swear in when I return. Im hoping there is a way to work it out but otherwise ill just miss the trip as this is way more important.

The fact that you're worried, indicates that you value your opportunity to become a Naval Officer more than a free jaunt through the 'old world'. For me, it would be a no-brainer. It also means that your enjoyment of the trip may be affected by worry that you may be out of contact & miss your opportunity. I wouldn't take that chance, but then, you may be a bigger gambler than I & are willing to risk it. For every "pro rec'd" candidate, there are probably 3-4 candidates who would love to fill that slot.;)

OBTH, those "free trips" almost always have expensive hidden costs you may be shocked by, and unprepared for... just sayin'!

This issue has flip flopped so many times at NRC I lost count, talk to your recruiter to see what the current thought is, do it via email so if anything goes south you have a paper trail.

I was backpacking in Japan when I got my Final Select 9 months ago... no issues on the Navy side but it cost me $1300 to get back ASAP to swear in and fly out for OCS.

If you can find the cash in case of having to come back early, you won't regret it. If you have to forgo this trip for a career... you won't regret it. Congrats!
