Waivers...

"We lookin fo you. We gon find you!"
Hey guys, had a couple of questions about waivers. I'm 20, a sophomore at an aerospace university, hoping to get a comm. through BDCP. I've basically just started learning about this program, but I'd like to know more about waivers. My vision is not 20/20 but I fly civilian and my vision is acceptable for the FAA. I know the Navy is much tougher, but what is the process about getting a waiver if that's even necessary. I feel that I have everything else in line, grades, well rounded, leadership etc, but this vision thing I know is going to be a snag, but I also definetely feel that I can get around it. I want to do this badly enough I'm not going to let this stop me. Anyways, let me know about the waivers and how successful they are. I know it's a case by case thing, but I guess I would just like to know if basically all waivers are turned down or if there are guys out there flying with less than perfect uncorrected vision (I guess they'd have gotten it fixed by now, contacts or laser). Anyways, thanks for the help.

For the FAA you pretty much just have to not be blind. For pilot in the Navy, maximum is 20/40, but I have heard that if you are 20/40 you do not have a good chance. LASIK is not approved, but PRK is.

As for a waiver, you need to apply and go through MEPS, which is the physical. The only way to start it is to need it. I would say try to contact your closest Navy Officer Recruiter and talk to him/her. They will be able to tell you the most accurate information.
