What are pockets on the flight suit for?

Since the thread on shroud cutter pockets got me thinking, what are the pockets REALLY for.

For example, why are the 2 thigh pockets different..

Top to Bottom,

Pen Holder- Obvious
Pocket behind- Not so obvious, but I use it for my ID sometimes.
Chest pockets- Cant have anything in them when I fly, carry car keys when I am not flying.
Left thigh- Not used in flight by me. I carry my motorcycle registration in it.
Right thigh- Wallet
Shroud cutter pocket- I have them on some, others I removed. Don't use it
Left Ankle- Never used, except as a FOD receptacle in flight
Right Ankle- Cover, nothing else...

What are they supposed to be for. I am pretty sure the thigh pockets are not different for no reason...

In my left thigh pocket I kept the same puke bag I took from the paraloft right before FAM 1 in primary. I could never find the heart to get rid of it...just in case.

Pen Holder... to quote MB, obvious.
Pocket behind: cell phone (& ID and debit card in the air)
Chest Pocket: wedding ring in the air, on the ground, nothing
Left thigh: cloth sunglass pouch
Right thigh: nothing
Left ankle: cover & wallet
Right ankle: random papers i need
Shroud cutter pocket: nothing. (maybe a candy wrapper if i finish it while walking out to the plane)

Puke bag goes between my g-suit and thigh on my right leg.

Top to Bottom,
Pen Holder- Obvious
Pocket behind- cigarettes and lighter after they took the cigarette pocket off.
Chest pockets- ID and shot record
Left thigh- ???
Right thigh- ???
Shroud cutter pocket- shroud cutter/good knife
Left Ankle- PCL
Right Ankle- Gloves/cover

Anybody else got a guess?

Pen holder: 1 naked lady pen
Pocket behind: change and random yellow stickies
Left Chest: Keys and sunglasses on deck, nothing airborne
Right chest: nothing
Shroud cutter pocket: nothing.
Thighs: nothing. Looks like a sack of doorknobs with things hanging out.
Lower right: cover, wallet
Lower left: random papers I need, cell phone, and can of snuff.

Everything gets moved to my g-suit when I fly and have any chance whatsoever of not landing where I took off, except combat. Even then I keep my cover, sunglasses and snuff.

Someone thought it would be a good idea. Thats about the only thing I can come up with.

My other thought is that back in the day, the shapes of the pockets maybe had to do specifically with some piece of flight gear that was meant to be carried in them. And when that piece of gear went away, the pockets just stayed the same.

Left arm pocket: foamies, loose change and my clas ring when I fly
Left chest: not flying-wallet, nothing when I fly
Right chest: not flying-keys and cell, again nothing flying
Thighs: nothing
Left ankle: nothing on the ground, wallet and cell flying
Right ankle: cover, and keys when flying

I used to carry puke bags in my left thigh pocket, but I stopped when I got winged and moved to Mayport. Don't really know why, but I did.

I used to carry my PCL in my ankle pockets, but that also changed getting to HSL. Now it just rests on the center console.

Why do people take the things out of their breast pockets when flying? Is it just a comfort thing? I leave my keys, change, knife and cell phone in my breast pocket while flying.

Comfort. Dunno about other gear, but with the T-6 gear, I find it uncomfortable to have anything more than my wedding ring in the breast pockets. Tried flying w/ y wallet there once... not comfortable at all.

I guess so far, the answer is: No one knows.

For me (ashore):

Pen pocket: Pen
Pocket underneath: Pencil that doesn't fit in pen pocket and foamies
Left breast: Keys (on deck), nothing (in air).
Right breast: Cell phone (on deck), key to a desk drawer at work w/ cash, change.

Left thigh: Nothing (on deck), empty foamie thingy in flight.
Right thigh: Gradesheet(s) on deck.
Left leg: Various papers, glasses case, puke bag. Cell phone, keys (in flight).
Right leg: Wallet, cover.

If you ever have to eject, those things in your pockets will break your ribs/stab you in the lung (keys) on opening shock. With a torso harness it would be very uncomfortable anyway, just sitting there. In helos, I don't imagine it would matter.

No, it's still painful.
