What's issued to the new SNA's? You're going need flight suits, helmets, and all that good stuff. Is it standard issue or do u have to go out and buy someones hand-me-down junk. How does the navy take care of flight maps, kneeboards, oxygen masks, etc. If there is a list of standard issue items whats on that list...im just curious. thanx!

Are the helmet visors standardized or what? I've seen some that have the orange tint, others with the darker tint.

all helmets are going to be covered with white reflective tape. Black visor (though they give you a clear one for night flights) and a boom mike.

for flight school, this is what they give you...i don't know if you get extra stuff in the fleet
4 flightsuits
2 pair boots
1 green flight jacket
1 leather jacket
2 pair gloves
1 helmet (with dark and clear visor) (you'll change helmets if you go helos) and boom mike
1 pair of aviator sunglasses
1 kneeboard
1 parachute bag
1 helmet bag
and that's all i can remember

Yeah, they give you everything you really need, except the kneeboard is pretty bulky, so most guys buy there own civilian one that's a whole lot more user friendly. If you go jets or E-2/C-2, then you go through a second fitting at D-jet where they issue g-suit, torso harness, O2 mask and all that good stuff.

ooo aviator sunglasses...nice...i mean, ::clears throat::, uh, yes that is a nice addition

Do they make u buy an aviator watch with the tycrometer and compass readings on it? I would imagine that no one really uses those things cause the dials are so small on the watches, plus you have flight computers so why bother.

I got a bunch of random crap that I'll never use. Here's some of it:

-a skull cap (because they don't issue us AF Nav types helmets right away)
-a switch blade (If the SV-2 has a one useless knife, why do I need another?)
-a whiz wheel
-a plotter
-dividers
-a flashlight (again...there's already one in the SV-2)
-a Casio G-shock nerd watch
-A stop watch (the sports style stop-watch...not the typical instrument pilot type)
-A big-ass leather attache document case. (This thing is frickin' huge...and I've never acutally seen anybody other than a lawyer, a professor, or that guy with the nuclear codes for the Prez walk around with one)

All this stuff is useless to me, but I haven't the energy to put it all on Ebay.

Likely referring to the E6-B flight computer (or is it E-6B?). One side is a circular slide rule, capable of calculating a couple dozen important flight-related numbers, among other things.

The reverse is used for plotting wind triangles, and calcuating your wind correction angle when dead reckoning. A fun little toy, just a bitch to use when bouncing around in turbulence...

AF Nav's get the leather attache case if I'm not mistaken. Navy guys used to get the useless watch and knife but they knocked that off a while ago. You also get a "parachute bag" a ginormous square duffel bag with a zipper. Looks very useful for packing six months worth of stuff for cruise or for getting a body out of your house inconspicuously

For the Navy guys,a "whiz wheel" is a CR-2. Personally I find it a lot easier to use than an E6B. Either way, you won't really use it once you get out of the training commnads. Actually I rarely used in the training commands. A calculator was much easier and more accurate for tests.

Yes, everything is built into your helmet. With exception of maybe a stop watch and a kneeboard, you don't really need to buy anything. I still have my old kneeboard, which was cumbersome in the T-34, but helpful for putting your hand on in the H-57. Now it's cumbersome again, especially w/ the stupid cyclic on one side and the FLIR HCU on the other...but that's just me.
