Sounds like the title for a new thread...

Chuck Yeager though... (hmmm).
If only he were a Naval Aviator, it would help my opinion a bit.
Ok, ok…Armstrong rode to the moon and that is an incredible accomplishment. New rule…if you’ve been to the moon you get to be a dick.

I've heard countless stories from people who met chuck that he was a complete asshole. A real, "never meet your heroes, they'll only disappoint you" kind of guy.
And I've read that he said he really didn't feel like a celebrity or hero and was uncomfortable with the spotlight and questions. Being this way minimized the number and length of any such encounter. Just wasted to live each day as the rest of us do, in private with his family.

No doubt. It' the least we can do as a society...
That was Buz Aldren.

"It was the right hook heard round the world.

In July 1969, Buzz Aldrin was part of the Apollo 11 crew that first landed on the moon, where he and Neil Armstrong made history as the first humans to set foot on it.

In September 2002, Aldrin, then aged 72, landed a punch on conspiracy theorist Bart Sibrel, who laboring under the false belief that the moon landings were staged, was busy confronting and insulting the legendary astronaut when it happened.

The incident occurred outside a hotel in Beverly Hills, California, and was captured on video by Sibrel's crew. Sibrel had been attempting to make a documentary film proving the moon landings were fake, according to news rep0orts at the time.

Aldrin can be heard exclaiming, "Will you get away from me?" while Sibrel, standing close to him, continues, "You're a coward and a liar and a thief," when Aldrin's punch lands with a thud.

The resulting video of the incident probably had the opposite effect that Sibrel was looking for.

Police declined to charge Aldrin after witnesses came forward stating that Sibrel had physically provoked him by poking him with a Bible and demanding the 72-year-old swear he really did go to the moon. Additionally, Aldrin had stated he was acting in self-defense and in defense of his stepdaughter, who was accompanying him.

Witnesses also stated that Sibrel had not only lured Aldrin to the hotel under false pretenses, but that he had repeated harassed Aldrin and other Apollo astronauts over the years.

Not only was Aldrin not charged, but the video garnered praise for Aldrin, who was seen not only as effectively defending himself but also as delivering poetic justice to a corrosive, nonsensical conspiracy theory."

I did. Been a while. I’ve had 5 hour flights having used zero gallons of gas (tow plane used a little). A ton of fun.
Coming back to this thread a month later after watching a video on gliders..... you mentioned 5 hour flights, what part of the country were you in that had the environment to stay airborn for 5 hours in a glider, and how long had you been flying gliders whenever you were got to the skill level of completing 5 hour flights?

Central PA, winds out of the Northwest = infinite ridge soaring. I had enough to solo, not much more. If the lift is there, it is too easy.

Dang gotcha. I live in that region so I hope to get the same sort of environment to glide in if that's something I choose to pursue. I can't find a straight answer, in this region, is winter gliding a thing?

Usually not. Runways get covered with snow and gliders aren’t heated.

I flew at Ridge Soaring Gliderport, which is now defunct. Haven’t flown in many years..not sure where I would recommend.

Also, if location (Pennsylvania) isn’t a consideration you can find glider ports along the front range of Rocky Mountains where one can get multiple hours of flight. I can’t say I’ve seen many people gliding in the winter.

Either way thanks for mentioning glider flying! There are two that seem to have good reviews within 30mins-1HR that I intend on going to. That flying sounds like it makes better stick and rudder pilots which sounds like a useful skill from a wannabe-aviator here.

I will definitely check it out if I get into flying gliders!

It’s too bad that all the reasonable people, primarily of that generation, are mostly too old or dead to deal with the nonsense that is becoming an epidemic in this country. There is no longer a large population of folks who possess critical thinking skills, or who value pesky things like honor and integrity.
