The end of NATO?

The “we would have to use our own forces in combat” is a red herring. We haven’t so far.

We (the West) should double down. This is a war of wills, to determine what kind of world we will have. Messy democracies? Or whatever you want to call Russia and China. Quoting…

A serious U.S. president would recognize that Putin is playing a very weak hand that we should exploit..In April 2022, following Russia’s retreat from the north of Ukraine, it controlled 19.6 percent of Ukrainian territory; its casualties (dead and wounded) were perhaps 20,000. Today Russia occupies 19.2 percent and its casualties are 800,000, reckon British sources… More than half of the 7,300 tanks [Russia] had in storage are gone. Of those that … The reallocation of resources from productive sectors to the military complex has fueled double-digit inflation. Interest rates are 21 percent.”

If this were poker, Putin is holding a pair of twos and bluffing by going all in. Trump, instead of calling Putin’s bluff, is saying, “I think I’ll fold.”

A Russian international affairs scholar, who can speak only privately, remarked to me from Moscow that Putin’s team sees Trump’s team as a clown car, full of amateurs — easy pickings for the savvy and cynical Putin’s ultimate goal: “MRGA — Make Russia Great Again (and Make America Less Great Again).”
As long as it doesn't turn into WW3 or Cold War 2.0, we'll manage. May I have the footnote for the quote please?

The key difference there is we were in a recession at that time. Today's current policy decisions are far more likely to cause a recession.

It's also worth noting that the Plaza accords killed the domestic automotive industry. Not exactly confidence-inspiring if one's goal is the resurgence of American manufacturing.
Jee, you don't think the Simpson's prediction will come true? In reality it's probably more foreshadowing/ soft disclosure than anything.... Honestly, policy is dictated by politicians and lobbyists interests for whatever lines their, or their friend's, pockets. They don't really care about the people regardless of what they say. That's why it's called a political stage. Either way it looks like we're going to have to buckle up.

Every time I see stuff like "Ukraine started it" I think of Orwell...

"The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command... and if all others accepted the lie, which the party imposed, if all records told the same tale, then the lie passed into history and became truth"
Truth is stranger than fiction. Lies passing into history that become truth is the sum of human history. Probably why it's called his-(s)tory.

I believe the 6'3" figure and the weight are those that Trump wants us to believe and that the true numbers are probably 6'1" and more pounds. As someone just a year younger than the president, I can personally attest to losing an inch or two of height with age.
Just spitballin', but if I were a Vegas oddsmaker, I'd put the over/under at 6'0" and 250lbs, and see where the bets go.

Edit: How tall is Melania? and why does he always wear that long coat?

It's bizarre. He does self-described alpha moves like wearing his ties way too long and keeping over-the-top bushy eyebrows. But then subjects his fanbase at rallies to 70's gay Village People anthems, while he dances to them with the double jerk-off dance, It's confounding.

I’m sorry you have nothing better to worry about than how Trump dances, must be exhausting

It's because he's permanently stuck in the early 80s (where he was still listening to 70s music), his megalomaniac ego cannot comprehend self improvement, and everyone around him doesn't have the balls to tell him otherwise.

Bingo. I point to this every time someone tries to assert his “consistency in conviction” or somesuch thing.

Yeah, the world hasn’t changed a bit in the past 40 years, so the same solutions are still valid. If Trump lived to be 100, we’ll be hearing about nation building and spreading democracy in the Middle East in 2047 like it’s a fucking brand new idea.

(Luckily by then AGI will have reduced us all to the significant of a fruit fly, at least one can hope.)

To be fair, that era was his personal Vietnam. Coming out clean during the STD wars, and specifically the Battle of Gonorrhea was a great triumph.
