USNA Curriculum - Plebe Year

I see that the curriculum at USNA requires chemistry and Calc 1 the first semester. What if one took AP Cal (especially BC) in high school as well as AP Physics, or took such classes in college previously? Can one take Calc 2 and Physics 1 in addition to Chem the first year?

And, what if you want to major in electrical engineering? How is this possible with all the other courses required and not starting the engineering sequence until your second year?

Do midshipman take 6 classes per semester rather the usual 5 that most college students take?

BTW I just learned that the upper classmen running Plebe indoc at USNA are called "Detailers" - an interesting choice of words!!!!

Unless something has changed, Plebe's will take an equivalency test at the end of Plebe summer. I can't remember the details, but I think the test is required if you scored under a certain AP test score minimum. If you test out of courses, then you get credit for them and can advance.

It's not uncommon for Mids to take > 18 credits per semester in order to meet the 4-year graduation requirement.

I had the same reaction last night... if you don't like detailers as a midshipman, just wait 'til you work with them in the fleet

You either graduate in 4 years or you don't graduate (unless you cheat on the chemistry exam...too soon?)

If you're that old, do you have any college credits? Not coming in right out of high school is a bit different process, but even then, your other college credits won't count (or at least haven't in the past).

If you have any potential graduate school aspirations that would require undergraduate calculus or physics, I highly recommend that you re-take the courses to have actual college grades associated with them.

Using AP credits basically shows up like you've been exempted.

Hi, I am in college,so yes, I have college credits. I don't think the academy is in the cards for me even if the entry cut off age is 22 (or 23 now?). I think OCS is the most realistic option. But, I was curious how the midshipmen handle the curriculum. Taking Calc and Physics, or Calc and Chem is hard enough at a regular college while taking 3 other gen credit classes.

Then again, I guess the Academy only takes the best and most well prepared in the country.
