What is the proper USMC way to roll utility sleeves? I have seen all sorts of methods, but I am curious to see what tecniques others have used. I never remember being officially 'taught' how to roll my sleeves, i just kinda did it so they looked ok. I like the way DI's do it, real crisp and tight. How do they do that?

I'll take a stab at it since that link didn't get too specific other than 3" wide 2" above elbow.
1. Cuffs should be unbuttoned.
2. Lay blouse front side down on the deck with sleeves extended.
3. Fold the blouse so that the buttons are now on top, but the front of the shoulders are still on the deck.
a. The folds should run from the armpit to the wrist leaving a portion for your arm to go through about the width of your hand.
4. Keep the crease in place and neatly fold the sleeves up, smoothing out the wrinkles as you go.
5. Stop when you get to the flap on the pockets that sit on your deltoids.
6. Assure that flaps are uniform and sleeves fit tight.

I am more than a little amazed he didn't pick it up at OCS, but hey, yeah ask around TBS right when you check in...or suck it up and ask your Staff Sgt at your OSO office...

I've "heard", and I emphasize heard, that some DI's cut the bottom half of their sleves off so there is less to roll and less to bunch up. I dont know how many or if any really do do it, I mean it would most likely be outta regs and you know how DI's are with rules.
Never happen. Think about it, you have to be able to roll the sleeves down to go into the field. And before somebody says, "well they could just buy a couple extra blouses," sorry but no all your uniforms have to be servicable.
DI's know when they are going into the field and could easily adjust their uniforms accordingly. I never saw any SI or PS adjust their uniform in any way. They just disappear into the house and reappear dressed in whatever they needed for the event.
I know tons of people that have "inspection" this and "field" that. In a culture where people attach their shirts to their socks, hold the bottom of their trousers to their boots with springs, starch their digital cammie covers, and routinely pick appearance over function I can definitely see sleeve cutting happening.

And the instructions that were typed out looked to be pretty much right on. Like it was said it is just trial and error.
DI's do alot of stuff that is out of regs IOT look better.
Not supposed to starch cammies or tailor khaki shirts to be formfitting, shaved heads are eccentric, not supposed to use chevrons or other pinning devices on the back of your shirt to hold the creases, not supposed to "tack" your pockets down or use glue on any part of your uniform, etc...
Not everyone does these obviously.
I have heard stories of Marines cutting their sleeves to make the rolls look tighter (or of Marines whose arms were too big to properly roll the sleeves), but I have yet to see it firsthand. Seems like it is another uniform rumor along the lines of putting fishing line in your creases to make them stand out (heard, but never seen).
Good sleeve rolling just takes a little experience and some patience, don't stress out about it...

on the topic. Are "horseshoe" haircuts considered regulation cuts? Talk about eccentric.
