In TACAIR, almost exclusively. Many of the wives didn't know my real first name was Brett until they had to introduce me to a non-Navy person. :D I actually had to get used to my real first name again when I got down to SD.

Brett

I'm not TACAIR and nobody knows me by my actual name. From Admirals to wives, everyone knows me as Bunky.

VAW 110 - Firebirds

The protagonists' squadron patch was actually VAW 110, which was previously the West Coast RAG, before it combined into one big training machine in Norfolk. Rumor has it that the crew was cruising around the Miramar, spied the 110 patch, and (much to the dismay of the jet dudes) chose that for the patch.

There's a retired Tomcat guy who used to work at Wings (not the embroidery shop - the one with a plane on top). Not sure if he's there any more, but he was at Miramar when they were filming the afore-mentioned bad mid 80s movie about Naval aviation. He's got some great stories..

But it still was the most "accurate" depiction of Naval Air to date since the Korean War film, Bridges at Toko RI http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bridges_at_Toko-Ri

Quite possibly one of the greatest war movies ever made. You new guys want to know what it's like being a reservist called back from his real-world life to active status for war? Watch it. Parallels today more than some might think. William Holden gives a phenomenal performance. 5 stars.

Absolutely .... the Reserves ... commitment and all ...... believe it.

....While a copilot on the Whale .... one long night we were driving down to Bangkok from Tokyo and the Captain and I were passing the time with small talk. When we entered the So. China Sea and started past Hainan Island, the talk turned to reminiscing about things past, times past, and friends past.

As we checked in with "Ho Chi Minh" (Saigon) Radio (I always called them "SAIGON Radio" the first few times on initial check-in just to tick 'em off) --- and were approaching Danang the Captain got real quiet. Staring straight ahead out of the darkened cockpit he then began talking about a couple of his close friends who had been POW's and didn't "make it". I listened while he described how honorable and courageous they had been in captivity. I asked him where he knew them from ... and he told me .... from the Hanoi Hilton.

I stared stupidly at him for a few seconds until the recognition clicked in like a glass of water tossed into my face ... my Captain was a former AF Major, ANG F-105 THUD driver, called up to active duty from his "cushy" airline job, did his duty, was shot down in middle 1965, and spent 7 1/2 long years as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese when finally released in February, 1973.

Quiet courage. A real gentleman. Now he was back in the saddle as an airline Captain. It was my privilege and honor to fly with him.
(*edit* I've usually found that the guys who talk the least about their "exploits and heroics" frequently did the most. Conversely, the opposite is also true ... )

As far as movies go ... do see The Bridges at Toko-Ri. It's Hollywood, sure, but it's better than the hand-wringing, mea culpa, semi-psychotic stuff that comes out all too frequently today. It holds duty, honor, and country up even when sacrifices and heartbreak are the order of the day.

It's old, but it's worth your time :)

ok nobody has commented on Flight of the Intruder yet... realistic, cheesy, did it mention "keeping the faith" too much? At least it showed an actual Mig 17 in there instead of a black F-5 ...

Hey if you want a realistic aviation movie, look no further than the critically acclaimed Iron Eagle compendium!

I thought it was a great book (NYT best seller list) and movie…even if it was written by an A-6 driver :) . Although it was fiction, many of the scenes in the book and movie were based in part on recognizable, actual events. For example, the opening scene where they take a hit and Jake's BN is killed, actually happened in our airwing (and not the author's) at the start of the cruise. (And our actual event was unfortunately far more chilling and tragic than was repeated in the book/movie.)

Although it was fiction and some events were exaggerated or implausible, it was much more accurate in its presentation than Top Gun.

At least it showed an actual Mig 17 in there instead of a black F-5 ...
The movie studio wanted to get some MiG's for the Top Gun movie but couldn't. (Of course the fact that the U.S. had captured MiG's, were flying them, and this was still highly classified at the time might have had something to do with it. ;) )
Flight of the Intruder came out later, when the MiG's were available and declassified.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2006-11/24/content_5372004.htm

While the real MiG's remainded under guarded wraps over in the desert, at Miramar, NFWS used camouflaged F-5E's to simulate the MiG-21 in their DACM training. They were a tremendous challange. (F-5's were also flown by nearly 30 other countries.)

Therefore, although the movie has taken a lot of grief for its imposter black F-5's, at the time the F-5D Tiger II seemed a reasonable if not excellent MiG stand-in replacement for the movie.

Why do Unrestricted Aviators (aka Helo Bubbas) feel the need to apologize/repent for wanting Jets/Props/E6/whatever (if they did) or having read books about it? I have seen DH/CO/XO's rail guys if it ever came to light that they did not want helos from day 1.

Sorry, Bates. I guess my thought process now is that wanting jets in primary is kind of like being in college wanting to date the hot slut that puts out like a fire hydrant. Sure, every guy does, but as you get further along you realise how silly it was and how much of a mistake it would have been.
I understand that there are a lot of happy jet pilots out there. I'm just glad I didn't pursue that path any farther.

ACTUALLY .... someone did "comment" on it ... they said "watch it" ... but nevertheless ... tell me, young Gyrene, what does one such as yourself know about what is "realistic, cheesy, .... and keeping the faith" .... ??? Please tell me ....

How does ... "realistic" & "cheesy" go hand in hand, anyway ... ??? Tell us. I'm all ears ... and eyes. :)

The night SAM shots/depictions of SAM's tracking were right on .... but you already know that, right???

It says in the article that the US was flying mig-17,21, and 23's, but why didn't we get any mig-29's or sukhois? Where they just harder to get back then? Forgive my ignorance, and I know there are alot of countries that still fly them, but isn't flying against a mig-17 kind of like them training against F-86's? Course if that's the best you have, then thats the best you have.

Probably a better Air-to-Air adversary representative than the "real thing" ... :)

The PAK's, while sporting their new F-16's that I flew against @ Luke and Willie, thought the F-86 was a better fighter than the General Dynamics product .... they longed for their old Saber Jets .... perception and experience is everything, I guess.

*edit* Sabre ... not "saber" ... I must be losin' it.
