The new news is that SECNAV has directed that the name for the Navy's newest underway replenishment vessel be USNS Amelia Earhart.

The question is: What other US Navy Ships have been named after a woman? I exclude the USS Roosevelt DDG-80 named in honour of Pres. Franklin D. and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

I know that back in the OldNav, my Navy if you will, it was considered bad luck to have a woman aboard a US Navy ship, while underway, grounds for mutiny as I recall.:eek: Also, all ships were referred to as "her" or "she", a really long standing tradition.

USS Higbee .... DD-something or other --- Gearing class --- first US Navy warship named for a woman. Learned that one in NROTC .... :)

Woman at sea !!??!!:eek: Shiver me timbers !!! :eek: Perish the thought !!! :eek:

But while in port .... ???

Just make sure you hang your tie on the stateroom doorknob ... :D

You mean there are ways other than computers of finding things out? J/k, but in the entirety of my college career all my homework and the majority of my tests were submitted electronically. I kinda miss real books...

Without Wikipediaing it, I would have to say the USS Hopper, don't know the hull number, but guessing.

We just call it Intellapedia to make it sound more authoritative but same same. Not to say the people that submit aren't wonderful, intelligent folks but there's damn little in the Intel world that is black and white.

What type/types of ship?? Where is/are "they" today ???

Good question, "survivors afloat". USS Arizona still in commission? But afloat, no. Couple of yard craft probably still out there, know city of San Francisco had one of the harbor fire boats for a long time, but think that is now gone.

Katrina damaged a boat, harbor craft, that was a PH 12/7/41 survivor, think was to be used as a museum, maybe Mobile, Alabama, think maybe that was sunk by the storm. My first thought was the USS Texas, but after checking found she was not at PH. Maybe an Army boat belonging to AAC at Hickam?
