Gun Safes

I stand to inherit a few handguns from my late grandfather's collection, and also have three long guns that need storage. I want a gun safe to store these in. Do you, the members of this board, have any recommendations on something that won't break the bank but has capacity for five long guns and four pistols?

I suppose that would depend on how much you want to spend.

I think these guys make the best safes out there: http://www.hallsafe.com/

Fort Knox is probably equal in value.

I would hope you plan on getting more guns in the future and that you plan accordingly. Get the best one you can afford and plan for that future. You know what you are protecting. Firerating is a must.

Liberty safe makes a nice entry level safe that cost me about $700. Fire rated to 1200 degress for 30 minutes. It holds 20+ long guns.

I bought it a couple of years ago at a hardware store so I could store some toys in my basement of the home I now live in.

OR, you could put them in one of my safes....:D

Homak ... @ $420 + shipping ... relatively cheap and will get the basic job done ... no fire protection .... but you are a student now; you can spend $$$$ thousands later for gun safes when you've "made it" ... check the net. :)

Thats actually really nice for the price!

Do they classify that as a safe or a locking gun cabinet. It looks like the latter to me.

Gun cabinet would probably be "technically" correct ... then again, many manufacturers and vendors like to move seamlessly between the two terms ... i.e., gun SAFE and gun CABINET. But we're trying to keep the cost down for young STUD and provide a reasonable measure of security, yes???

Check one link out ...
Wasserman Enterprises, Inc

And then, they are from Fridley, Minnesota, eh??? :)

Expensive safe later .... serenity now ... expensive safe later ... serenity now .... :sleep_125

A couple follow-up questions if I may: What should I be looking for in a gun safe feature-wise, i.e. number of bolts, electronic entry, etc.? Also, would any of y'all recommend buying a used gun safe/locker? Thanks.

Now, if you could just protect them from the movers....

On a related note...has anyone ever had any problem moving one via government move? I would likely move the guns myself anyway, but had been holding of because I had heard that the gub'mt movers often refuse to move them.

Any truth to this, or is it as long as its in your weight limit its good to go?

Never never never, let the movers move your guns. Last time I PCS'ed (95) they said they do in some cases from overseas but these are the same people who must have used a forklift to put my 12 foot duckboat into a 11 foot 10 inch space so no chance they would ever get the opportunity. As far as the safe I have a 16 gun Ft Knox and it was not a problem.

LOL...yeah...I meant the safe. See my comment above. Thanks!

I worked as a mover for two summers in college, and I can tell you that there is nothing that movers hate more than a gun safe. Especially when the customer wants it in an impossible place, like up stairs. :icon_rage

A used gun safe could end up being a good deal...check for quality fit...no clanging of the door when it is shut and locked..... more and bigger diameter bolts (lugs) are good, corner lugs are better. Some folks like hidden hinges. Relockers are a way to prevent easy drilling of your safe.

Since KBay has been on the resurrection kick...

Given that we all have bad mover stories, if the guns are locked in a safe, will they still move them? I may not be able to move the guns myself, and I probably should be getting something to put the 3 long guns and couple of pistols I have (w/ the opportunity to grow), I'm thinking of doing the safe thing. Does it matter if one gets a gun cabinet versus a gun safe? There's a good chance my next home may be a rental, so it's not like I can bolt it to the floor, whatever it is.

Thoughts?
