I guess I stand corrected then. I still don't think that's what it should take to get someone to study though. Maybe I'm just being stubborn, but I think the guys being downed should take it on themselves to seek any needed help.

agreed, but sometimes they are so jacked up they don't realize how far off the mark they are or they are studying the wrong stuff...happens...hell even happens in the RAG...

I always thought the chucks/khakis after a down was more of a 'how much do you care' type thing. If you went to a board with a shit hot uniform, ok this guy cares about his training and wants it bad. Come looking like a bag of nastiness and that says a lot too.
About the shower shoes. While at TBS sandals were ok as long as they couldn't be interpreted as shower shoes. I personally think if you are wearing pants/jeans you should be in closed toed shoes. Good looking sandals wth shorts OK. Shower shoes are disgusting

In the Marine Corps the service charlies have always been the "oh shit, im in trouble" uniform. I suspect the khakis are the same in the Navy. It should be used for warriors who are subject to review boards/court action. It's just a way to show that you're in a serious situation. It's not punishment...it's a way to show the formality of the no shit, real world situation that you've gotten yourself into. You'll never send your troops to an NJP or courtmarshall or even friggin traffic court in anything but that uniform if you ever get the chance to lead troops(to the people who haven't done it yet). It's just the way it is. If you look like a walking seabag in said uniform, it doesn't bode well.

Having to be in khakis for a day becase you were late for formation is a super bullshit situation perpetrated by some platoon leaders that have some fucked up priorities and are the product of a jacked up command climate...good initiative and bad judgment on the leader's part.

Well said and I think that pretty much sums it up. It's not like it's punishment when/if you have to wear them while standing duty. It's just the (potential) uniform of the day.

As a guy who had to wear the chucks on more than a few occassions during flight school, few things screamed "Help me!" like wearing the penalty suit. Sure, a struggling student will ask for help, but a guy wearing shiny shoes and a belt exudes an atmosphere of humility and willingness to learn that surpasses any verbal plea.
Plus, given the alternative of a few days of duty to study, the monkey suit doesn't seem like that bad of a punishment.

if you find yourself in the penalty suit, just hang out in the SDO office. Then they think your the SDO and not the d-bag who just downed a flight. It'll minimize the 'hey dude what happened' questions (at the expense of 'hey dude whos flying what and when' questions.

And at the same time, get your shit squared away.

Uniforms shouldn't be a penalty. Except in flight school perhaps. If your not in a bag you've obviously f-ed something up. Or your getting an award. Such is life.

edit: i've done the former (f- stuff up) far more than i've done the latter (receive awards) so there is hope for all....

seriously, work hard. that's all you gotta know.
