Here is a A-6A from the Tigers of VA-65, circa 1966. I have a magazine with another picture of this bird.

How about the Blue Blasters (VA-34) commerating the 50th anniversary of D-Day, June 6 1994:

Those are just beautiful. I think some newer a/c would look pretty darn good with those paint schemes...

Anyone else have more pics of the above birds?

A few airplanes have the "fake canopy" painted on the bottom: A-10s, CF-18s...

We're coming up on the 100th anniversary of Naval Air and the 75th had some great commemorative schemes. It would be really neat to see the color schemes of our history applied to the current fleet. Picture if you will...

A T-45 with Yellow Wings, silver fuselage and green tail ala the F-3F.

or an F/A-18F with the Pacific camo of a TBF

and of course the gloss gray and white of the 60's and 70's. It would be even better if we took the opportunity to make them the schemes of some of the hero's of Naval Air. Our first ace, CDR Dave Ingalls (admittedly tough since he got all his kills flying with the RAF), Tactician and Ace Jimmy Thatch, Navy Cross Winner LCDR Max Leslie and more modern legends like Ted Williams. These guys are our history and we should revel in it. Ok, dealing with Duke Cunningham will be a little more difficult.

VX-5 was, and since VX-5 and VX-4 combined, VX-9 has been, known as the Vampires. My guess would be the S-2 or C-1, can't tell from the photo, provided logistics support to the squadron or hauled passengers to/from China Lake to/from Pt Mugu. Similar to the JANET flights out of Vegas the Navy ran (still?) planes daily between the two testing bases. They were using C-26's to do that the last time I was there.

Hence, 'Vampire Airlines'.

As of late seems the standards for the tactical paint scheme have gone to more colorful paints, and not just on the CAG birds either. Noticed this while looking at several MH-60R/S paints, and many of the newer Bug/Super Bug schemes, loads of color. As if it's a competition between squadrons. Is the Navy using this as some form of advertising?
