Navy Working Uniform Now Authorized Off Base

I had a CAPT today tell me "In 20 years I have NEVER seen ANYONE ride a motorcycle in a flight suit" and proceeded to dress me down in front of the Granby St. post office.. (where my PO BOX is).. Even though stopping for mail and commuting in bags is 100% legal.

She was in stained Navy PT gear. Wicked overweight female SWO.

What is more professional.. Me in a clean flight suit (on my way to work) running into the lobby to check/grab my mail, or a CAPT in stained smelly PT gear, in line in the lobby to get her passport.

I told her "Ma'am, the regulations allow short stops and commuting, and if you come to gate 4, you will see approximately every 4th motorcycle be ridden by a person in a flight suit, from Airmen to Commanders"

She then got pissed at me, and I told her, "Ma'am, I am going to be late for quarters if I stay here any longer" and she let me go.

Where the hell do you go to get counseled by so many SWOs? I've been here a couple months now and I have yet to be corrected by a SWO for something, and I walk by plenty of O-2/3 SWOs with a "what's up" and routinely fill my car up off base in a bag.

On a funny note, walking to the car with a JG buddy and an ENS buddy, we got a "Afternoon Sir" and a salute..... from an ENS.... wearing the ike jacket, so he was presumably a SWO. We saluted back (since walking with a JG, I take his rank, right? ) politely and proceeded to laugh our asses off in the car.....

Norfolk is SWO central. And I'm on the SWOtivated base. Lots of staff/command types with sticks shoved up their ass here.

So far it's been 2 ass-chewings in 7 months by CAPTs wearing stuff that's not legal in town yelling at me for stuff that is.

Hmmm I wonder what they thing of me as I drive up Hampton Blvd everyday in my bag on my bike.

MB- do you wear an orange vest or is the base okay with just the bag?

I wear the vest, because every once in a while, you get a gate guard who is of the opinion of no vest = no access. Normally the DOD cop types, not the MAs.

And the day you get that guy, is the day you are running late for a brief.

Where exactly is PT gear allowed? I thought it was limited, even on base.

I just had to do the rider course again and the instructors were saying that the official, just recently updated Navy instruction says that all you have to have on during the day is long sleeves. Reflective vests/jackets are only required at night or reduced visibility.

Now, what happens when some cops get a stick stuck somewhere is another story.

To enhance the ability of other vehicle operators to see and avoid
motorcyclists, outer garments constructed of brightly colored and reflective materials are highly recommended during daylight hours. Reflective outer garments or vest shall be worn during nighttime hours.

I've been here for 3+yrs and have never been chewed out about my uniform. You just seem to attract trouble MB.

It is true, I do attract trouble.

Probably helps I'm easy to notice... 6'4", rides an odd motorcycle to work, has obscenely loud diesel truck otherwise. And I have SWO stompin' feet.

Yeah, the issue is that different bases have more restrictive rules.

Corpus, for sure, and Jax (I'm told) are both ones where military shall wear the vest on base at all times.

Honestly, it's not that big of deal. Plus, I have the Icon vest so it holds my ID on the front so I don't have to waste time at the gate digging for it with gloves on.

I actually like what the Navy is trying to do with the NWU and enlisted service uniforms. You go to a Navy base and you can see seven different uniforms being worn...just going to the hospital you could see utilities, johnny cash, etc. Now it would seem that everyone will be in the service uniform in an office environment or NWUs in a working--as I said...so it would seem.
