Interservice Transfer - Marines to Navy

I am a USMC OCS graduate from the PLC Air program and about to accept my commission Sept. 7, 2012. The reason an interservice transfer crossed my mind is because I really need to get the ball rolling and start my career. I had just completed my pre-commissioning PFT this morning and the OSO said my TBS date will be June of 2013. I understand this is the normal wait time for newly commissioned LTs, but it would be very difficult for me to wait that long under my present circumstances.

Here are the reasons why...

I was suppose to commission December of 2010 but my flight physical expired days before my commissioning date and nobody told me I needed a renewal. the admin at my OSO district even said they were at fault. They promised me they could expedite and the process would take six months. In reality, it took me 4 months just to schedule a flight physical, and 13 months for it to get processed. On top of that, I had already graduated college so I had to make a 4 month request for appointment after I got my physical back. I am also over $40,000 in debt and can not afford to keep living off a minimum wage job. I got cut off from my family after joining PLC in 2007 and haven't looked back since. That is why I'm in debt.

My question is, what are the chances of getting an interservice transfer to the Navy and keeping my pilot slot? Who would I have to contact in order to get accurate information on this option? Would it be easier for me to just receive my marine commission, then make a request to transfer or just go through Navy OCS? Hell, I would be willing to go through OCS again just for the paycheck.

I am not trying to "get out" of the marine corps. I love the marine corps and have always dreamed of being a marine, but sometimes life throws curve balls and you have to make changes. My naivete took the best of me for believing false promises. Such is life. What I really should have done was look into an interservice transfer two years ago, but I thought I could tough it out and wait it through because of my love for the corps. What would any of you do in my current situation? Is all this waiting around really worth it or should I be looking for a different career? Any advice would be appreciated.

So, you have to wait 10 months to go TBS and work a less than desirable job? Have you exhausted all of your options at your OSO office to get you into TBS faster? have you cited your current financial issues as a factor? Have you looked into your loan holder and see if you can defer your loans till a later date? have you looked into getting PTAD?

I know your chances are probably slim in this day and age and mentioning something like this will probably not win you a lot of friends in your chain of command especially with out seeking their guidance or help first. DD368s are usually signed off at the Regimental level (Read: 0-6 level) So you better have your eggs all in a basket and have a good case. I think you need to be more patient and do more research about your situation than go high and to the right and jump ship. You don't want to miss out on a great opportunity.

I graduated OCC but after my OSO dicked me around getting my flight contract and commission I went and talked to the Navy. I was able to get a pilot slot but had to go through Navy OCS again. If you commission you can try a straight transfer but I would venture a guess that your chances of that getting approved by both services are both slim and none. I was able to get a navy OCS date fairly quickly because I had previously submitted a package and been selected for NFO. By the time I got to Pensacola I ended up going through primary with guys I went to quantico with. Your only hope for the Navy in my opinion is to decline your USMC commission and start from scratch with the Navy. Between that and waiting for TBS, which do you think would be quicker? Be smart, suck it up, wait tables or bartend if you have to until June, drink beer, screw chicks, and enjoy not being in the suck (and pt of course)

For me its not about having a "less than desirable job", but rather, being able to pay rent/bills on time. The job itself doesn't bother me.

Good point. I thought TBS dates were set in stone and never knew any previous LTs that got their TBS dates changed. I will have to look into this and give them my case.

Have you looked into your loan holder and see if you can defer your loans till a later date?

Yes I have. If non-subsidized loans get deferred, it also capitalizes interest so it would not be worth it to defer.

have you looked into getting PTAD?

Until recently they changed the policy so they only allow new LTs to join PTAD for a maximum of two months before their TBS date and the next six months of PTAD are already booked. If I chose to do PTAD it would most likely be set in the few months before I ship out.

I just was talking to my friend I worked with at the NRD, if you declined to get commissioned and IF the boards go down in the spring for the USN and IF you were picked up, you MIGHT be able to go to OCS about the same time you would be leaving for TBS, but given what I just found out you probably wouldn't.

You need to realize that long before you finish the interservice transfer process, June 2013 will have come and gone. This is assuming the Marines are willing to let you go and the Navy is willing to accept you. Of course if you get denied, you then get to start a career with your bosses already knowing you wanted out. I don't see the Marines senior to you appreciating a non-Kool Aid drinker who did show the appropriate "I'm a Marine therefore every other service is beneath me" attitude.

June 2013 will be even further in the past before you would be able to complete the process of applying to Navy OCS, being accepted and starting - IF they even accepted you, which is at best probably 50-50.

"ONE JOB?!? You lazy goat, you have some big great big hairy nerve sitting up here in the business class with hard working people. He should be back there in the lazy class."

Seriously, get a second job if you need to in order to stay afloat. June will be here before you know it, and if you try and transfer/turn down your USMC commission - it is HIGHLY likely that you'll be up shit's creek without a paddle.

Hahaha I like your sense of humor. However, I forgot to mention that I have no car and go to work on a bicycle which makes getting another job...difficult. Riding a bicycle four miles to work then back five days a week is definately lazy (sarcasm). Getting groceries is also a pain in the ass, but the plus side is the bike riding keeps me in shape so i dont have to pt as much! ;)

Since now I know that getting selected for Navy OCS would take just as long I think i've made my decision. I'll call the Navy recruiter up just to make sure though. I appreciate the info.

Just throwing this out there, not to put you in more debt, but look into the usaa pre-commissioning loan. You can take out up to around 25K at ridiculously low interest. It'll pay off in the long run when you get to Pensacola and get some roommates and start pocketing bah like a big dog.

HAL is absolutely right. By the time you get a transfer to the Navy, June 2013 will have come and gone. I can understand how you are feeling because when I was in your shoes, all I wanted to do was start flight training and get to the fleet. Now that I have been in the fleet a couple of years looking back on that time I wonder how it flew by so fast.

Here is what you do: tough it out for the next 10 months. In the mean time, if you get a chance to go to TBS sooner, go for it. And for Christ sakes, capitalize Marine, Marines and Corps!
