Looking for the final word on wear of Silkies in rainbow PT?

Welcome to AW...great start Joe! "Silkies" should always be available for Rainbow PT, pink petticoats are under consideration for future wear.

I know an olive drab skivvy shirt wouldn't be allowed, but what about other colors (including other greens) and/or with pictures/writing (not unit shirts)

I've heard back and forth. I think they're awesome for the PFT and will continue to wear them until told not to.
IMO they are way better than regular PT shorts. A lot of brass don't like them because they are much shorter than regular shorts and if you're not wearing underwear underneath, there's a good chance your going to flash some of your junk as it bobs up and down like a bungee jumper. This, of course, makes it even more desirable.

If you are PT'ing on your own why wouldn't you wear Ranger Panties and some random uber-sports shirt?

Oh, geez. It always seems that male Marines are in one of two camps about silkies: Camp One, "I'm not wearing those girly-a$$ booty shorts!" Female Marines are split on these too, although the ones that are included in 'Camp Two' above usually look like a pillow stuffed in a trash bag when wearing said 'silkies.' (because they wear them two sizes too small)

Turns out that someone actually has higher standards than the Marines, who knew it was Hooters?
Well I know they're not authorized for unit PT like squadron runs, etc. which to me says I can wear them as civilian PT gear for PT on my own or section PT if rainbow is what we're told to wear...
But today for morning PT (rainbow) I wore silkies and a (Laugh for the Leathernecks) winter-green t-shirt...
I had a Staff Sergent tell me because the shirt was green I was wearing green on green and wasn't authorized to wear silkies in green on green...
Then a Sergent told me he was ordering me not to wear silkies at all when we have rainbow PT...
What does the order say on this?

You don't own any shorts for pt that you wouldn't rather wear than silkies? Seriously? If short shorts are your thing, just buy some tiny shorts of a different color and see how much people enjoy that.

Uh, I've been guilty in the past of doing what you just did right there, but I've still got to say it... why don't YOU look up the order? It'll say the same thing no matter who looks it up.
That being said, I don't believe P1020.34G goes into specifics about what constitutes "pt shorts" any further than referring to them as "green general purpose trunks." I will say that when we received our uniform board brief at the career course, the civilian woman (who was apparently one of the big honchos on the board) said that silkies are NOT authorized, as they are not issued -- much to the chagrin of our motivated master sergeant/senior instructor who liked to wear the smallest silkies I have ever seen.
Finally, I'd say in the end it really comes down to command discretion, kind of like how they leave the wearing of footwear and headgear in PT gear to be "as prescribed by the commander."
So, since I was never issued PT gear (in my commissioned life, anyway), I take this to mean that I'm cleared hot to wear silkies.
